What idols distract us from God today?
What modern idols might lead us away from God like in Ezekiel 23:5?

Setting the Scene

“‘Oholah played the harlot while still Mine; she lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians—warriors…’” (Ezekiel 23:5).

Israel, personified as Oholah, chased political alliances, military power, and the false gods of her neighbors. The heart of the issue? Misplaced trust. Anything we depend on to give us identity, security, or pleasure—apart from the Lord—becomes an idol.

Tracing the Pattern from Then to Now

• Desire turns to fascination.

• Fascination leads to trust.

• Trust demands sacrifice—time, money, loyalty.

• Sacrifice cements worship, even if we never call it that.

Modern Idols That Entice Us

• Money & Materialism

– “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10).

– Bigger houses, newer gadgets, inflated lifestyles promise safety and status.

• Sexualized Culture

– “Flee from sexual immorality” (1 Corinthians 6:18).

– Media, pornography, and casual hookups lure hearts with counterfeit intimacy.

• Career & Achievement

– “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36).

– Titles and accolades can subtly supplant God as the source of worth.

• Entertainment & Technology

– Endless streaming, gaming, social media loops cultivate escapism and comparison.

– “Be very careful, then, how you walk… making the most of the time” (Ephesians 5:15–16).

• Personal Autonomy

– “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 21:25).

– Self is enthroned; God’s authority becomes negotiable.

• Political or National Identity

– When party loyalty overshadows kingdom loyalty, the gospel gets rebranded to fit an agenda.

– “Our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20).

• Relationships & Family

– Good gifts become ultimate things when we demand from loved ones what only God can give.

– “Whoever loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me” (Matthew 10:37).

Warning Signs of an Idolatrous Heart

• Discontent when the idol is threatened or removed.

• Compromise of biblical convictions to keep the idol happy.

• Neglect of worship, fellowship, or Scripture for the idol’s sake.

• Emotional highs and lows tied more to the idol’s status than to God’s presence.

Guardrails to Keep First Love First

• Daily Scripture intake—letting God’s Word expose counterfeit trusts (Hebrews 4:12).

• Intentional gratitude—naming blessings reminds us Who provides (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

• Regular Sabbath rhythms—stepping away from productivity to enjoy God (Exodus 20:8–11).

• Generous giving—loosening money’s grip (2 Corinthians 9:7).

• Authentic community—inviting brothers and sisters to speak truth in love (James 5:16).

• Constant prayer—handing over anxieties and desires before they harden into idols (Philippians 4:6–7).

Closing Charge

“O Jacob, how can I give you up?” (Hosea 11:8). The Lord’s heart still burns with holy jealousy. As He called Israel back, He calls us: dethrone the modern Assyrians, and return to the One who truly satisfies.
