Why did God say, "I am against you"?
What actions led to God's declaration, "I Myself am against you"?

Verse in Focus

Ezekiel 5:8: “therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I, even I, am against you, and I will execute judgments among you in the sight of the nations.’ ”

The Setting: Jerusalem’s Unique Calling

• God had “set her in the center of the nations” (5:5), giving Israel a privileged position to display His character.

• Instead of being a light, the city mirrored—and exceeded—the darkness of pagan neighbors (5:6-7).

What Went Wrong—Five Key Actions

1. Rebellion against God’s ordinances

– “She has rebelled against My ordinances more wickedly than the nations” (5:6).

2. Rejection of His statutes

– “They have rejected My ordinances and have not walked in My statutes” (5:6).

3. Out-sinning the surrounding nations

– “You have multiplied iniquity more than the nations around you” (5:7).

4. Idolatry and defilement of the sanctuary

– Compare 5:11 with 2 Kings 21:4-7; Ezekiel 8:5-18.

5. Violence and bloodshed

– “One-third shall fall by the sword around you… and I will scatter a third to every wind” (5:12), indicating pervasive violence that invited divine judgment.

Repeated Pattern, Intensified Sin

• The people broke covenant vows (Deuteronomy 29:25-28).

• They ignored prophetic warnings (2 Chronicles 36:15-16).

• They presumed on God’s protection while despising His commands (Jeremiah 7:4-10).

Wider Biblical Witness

Leviticus 26:27-28—persistent disobedience brings God’s active opposition.

Jeremiah 21:13—“Behold, I am against you, O valley dweller…” when pride replaces dependence.

Nahum 2:13—God stands against Nineveh for cruelty; He judges His own people by the same standard.

Lesson for Today

• Privilege heightens accountability (Luke 12:48).

• God’s opposition is personal (“I, even I, am against you”) when sin is persistent and unrepented.

• True faith shows itself in obedience (John 14:15); without it, the same holy God still says, “I am against you.”
