Why do waters turn to blood?
What is the significance of "rivers and springs of water" turning to blood?

The Third Bowl: Waters Become Blood

- “Then the third angel poured out his bowl into the rivers and springs of water, and they turned to blood.” (Revelation 16:4)

- This is the midpoint of the seven bowl judgments—real, future events that will unfold exactly as recorded.

- Unlike the first plague on the Nile in Exodus 7, this judgment is worldwide, affecting every fresh-water source.

Echoes of Egypt, Amplified Globally

- Exodus 7:20–21 — Moses strikes the Nile; the water turns to blood; fish die; the river stinks.

- Revelation 16:4–6 — John hears the angel of the waters declare God “just” for giving blood to those who “poured out the blood of saints and prophets.”

- The pattern is plain: past, localized plague foreshadows a future, universal judgment.

Divine Justice on Display

- God repays bloodshed with blood:

- Genesis 9:6 — “Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed …”

- Revelation 16:6 — “They are deserving of this.”

- The third bowl vindicates martyrs from Revelation 6:9–11. Heaven’s altar answers their cry for justice.

Life-Sustaining Water Withdrawn

- Rivers and springs represent continual provision and refreshment (Psalm 23:2; Jeremiah 2:13).

- Turning them to blood removes what humanity needs most, underscoring that true life flows only from God (John 7:37–38).

- The stench and death mirror the spiritual corruption of a world that has rejected the Living Water.

A Stern Warning with Redemptive Purpose

- 2 Peter 3:9 — God is “patient … not wanting anyone to perish.” Each bowl intensifies the call to repent (Revelation 16:9).

- Just as Pharaoh hardened his heart, earth-dwellers will “blaspheme the name of God” (16:9) unless they turn while there is time.

Living in Light of This Truth

- Revere Scripture’s certainty: what God foretells, He fulfills.

- Keep hearts tender; do not let repeated warnings breed indifference.

- Proclaim Christ, the only fountain that never runs dry (Revelation 22:17).

How does Revelation 16:4 demonstrate God's judgment on those rejecting His grace?
