Why expose, not ignore, sinful acts?
Why is it important to "expose" rather than ignore sinful behaviors around us?

Living as Children of Light

Ephesians 5:11 – “Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.”

• In Christ, believers are called “light in the Lord” (Ephesians 5:8).

• Light and darkness cannot peacefully coexist; light always reveals what darkness hides (John 3:19-21).

What “Expose” Means

• To make visible, uncover, bring into the open.

• Not an invitation to harsh judgment, but a call to reveal truth so that repentance can follow (Galatians 6:1).

Why Exposing Sin Matters

• Obedience to a direct command from God (Ephesians 5:11).

• Protection of the church from corruption—“a little leaven leavens the whole lump” (1 Corinthians 5:6).

• Preservation of a clear witness in a dark world (Philippians 2:15).

• Rescue of those trapped—“whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death” (James 5:19-20).

• Cultivation of healthy fear and respect for holiness—“rebuke in the presence of all, so that the rest also will be afraid” (1 Timothy 5:20).

• Prevention of greater judgment—Christ warns churches that tolerate sin (Revelation 2:20-23).

• Encouragement toward growth—“pursue holiness, without which no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14).

Biblical Snapshots of Faithful Exposure

• Nathan confronted David over adultery and murder (2 Samuel 12:1-15).

• John the Baptist reproved Herod for his unlawful marriage (Matthew 14:3-4).

• Jesus openly denounced hypocritical religious leaders (Matthew 23).

• Paul resisted Peter’s hypocrisy “in front of them all” (Galatians 2:11-14).

How to Expose with Wisdom and Grace

• Examine personal conduct first (Matthew 7:5).

• Speak truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).

• Use Scripture as the standard (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

• Aim for restoration, not humiliation (Galatians 6:1-2).

• Maintain humility, remembering personal need for grace (1 Corinthians 10:12).

Encouragement from Scripture

• The Spirit convicts hearts (John 16:8); the believer’s role is faithful witness.

• God honors courageous truth-telling (Proverbs 28:1).

• Walking in light brings fellowship and cleansing (1 John 1:7).

Personal Application

• Stay separate from practices that dishonor Christ, yet stay present enough to shine light (Ephesians 5:7-10).

• Keep conscience tender by daily time in the Word (Psalm 119:105).

• Trust God for results; faithful exposure is an act of worship, leaving outcomes in His hands (1 Corinthians 4:2).

How does Ephesians 5:11 connect with 1 John 1:5-7 about light?
