Why is lying about others a grave sin?
Why is bearing false witness against a neighbor considered a serious sin?

Bearing False Witness — The Command Stated

“ ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.’ ” (Deuteronomy 5:20)

Rooted in God’s Nature

• God is truth itself. “God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)

• To lie is to contradict the very character of the Creator.

• When we speak falsely, we side with the devil, “a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)

A Command Anchored in Covenant Community

• Israel’s life together depended on trustworthy testimony; false witness shattered communal justice.

• “You shall not spread a false report. Do not join the wicked by being a malicious witness.” (Exodus 23:1)

• Courts, marriages, business dealings, and friendships all crumble without truthful words.

Consequences of False Testimony

• God detests it: “There are six things the LORD hates… a lying tongue… a false witness who pours out lies.” (Proverbs 6:16-19)

• It invites judgment: “A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who pours out lies will perish.” (Proverbs 19:5)

• It destroys others’ reputations, freedoms, and even lives—an assault on the image of God in our neighbor.

Revelation 21:8 lists “all liars” among those excluded from the New Jerusalem, underscoring eternal stakes.

Truth Fulfilled in Christ

• Jesus embodies truth: “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6)

• His trial was marred by false witnesses (Matthew 26:59-60), highlighting the sin’s gravity.

• At the cross He bore the penalty for every falsehood, freeing believers to walk in integrity.

• The Spirit now forms a truthful people: “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor.” (Ephesians 4:25)

Living Truthfully Today

• Guard the tongue: pause, verify, and refuse gossip.

• Uphold justice: speak up for the innocent and refuse to distort facts.

• Model transparency at home, work, and church; integrity is evangelistic.

• Let Scripture renew the mind daily, so that honest words flow naturally (Psalm 19:14).
