Why value each role in God's plan?
Why is it important to recognize individual contributions in God's larger plan?

Seeing the Value in a Name

“From the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;” (Numbers 13:5)

Numbers 13:5—A Name in the List

• God did not say, “Someone from Simeon.” He recorded Shaphat’s name and his father’s name.

• Every spy is identified—twelve tribes, twelve men, twelve stories.

• A simple verse shows the Lord’s habit of honoring personal faithfulness inside a massive, nation-shaping mission.

Why Recognizing Individual Contributions Matters

• Personal knowledge is God’s pattern

 – “I have called you by name; you are Mine.” (Isaiah 43:1)

 – Jesus said, “Even the hairs of your head are all numbered.” (Luke 12:7)

• It affirms each believer’s dignity

 – We are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)

 – Names in genealogies (e.g., Matthew 1) highlight individual worth.

• It motivates wholehearted service

 – “God is not unjust; He will not forget your work.” (Hebrews 6:10)

 – Paul singles out coworkers: “Greet Priscilla and Aquila… Epenetus… Mary…” (Romans 16)

• It guards against comparison

 – “To one is given…” (1 Corinthians 12:8-11) shows varied gifts, same Spirit.

 – We celebrate distinct roles instead of measuring ourselves against others.

• It strengthens unity

 – “The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you.’” (1 Corinthians 12:21)

 – Recognizing contributions helps the body of Christ function in harmony.

Scripture Snapshots of Individual Impact

• Bezalel & Oholiab—Exodus 31:2-6: named artisans who built the Tabernacle.

• Rahab—Joshua 2:1; 6:25: a single woman’s faith preserved a family and aided Israel.

• Ruth—Ruth 4:13-22: one Moabite widow woven into Messiah’s lineage.

• The boy with five loaves—John 6:9: an unnamed child remembered for generosity.

• Dorcas—Acts 9:36-41: her sewing ministry stirred an entire community.

Living This Truth Today

• Call out specific acts of service in your church—greeting, cleaning, teaching, praying.

• Keep a journal of names you intercede for; celebrate answered prayers next to each name.

• When reading Scripture, pause at lists of names and thank God for His detailed care.

• Encourage others personally (“I saw the way you _____; God used it to bless me”).

• Remind yourself: if God recorded Shaphat’s name, He certainly sees yours.

How can we apply the example of tribal leadership in our church today?
