Widow's example for church finances?
How can we apply the widow's example to our church's financial stewardship?

Setting the Scene

“Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and watched the crowd putting money into it. Many rich people put in large sums.” (Mark 12:41)

The Heart Behind the Pennies

• In the very next verses we learn the widow offered “two small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a denarius.” Yet Jesus said she “has put in more than all the others” (vv. 42-43).

• God’s arithmetic measures sacrifice, not size. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)

Principles for Personal Giving

• Give first to God, not from what is left over (Proverbs 3:9-10).

• Give proportionally, yet stretchingly: “Their extreme poverty overflowed into rich generosity… they gave according to their ability and even beyond it.” (2 Corinthians 8:2-3)

• Give willingly and cheerfully: “God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Implications for Congregational Stewardship

1. Celebrate faith-filled obedience more than dollar amounts.

2. Budget in ways that reflect dependence on God, not merely on spreadsheets.

3. Keep administrative costs lean so sacrificial gifts advance the gospel.

4. Model transparency; the widow gave in public view, and Jesus openly affirmed her.

5. Teach stewardship regularly; don’t wait for campaigns or crises.

Practical Steps for Our Church Today

• Begin every finance meeting by reading Mark 12:41-44 aloud.

• Allocate a “Widow’s Portion” line item—funds reserved for missions or benevolence that require faith to maintain.

• Encourage testimonies of sacrificial giving (without pressure or boasting).

• Offer financial discipleship classes that connect budgeting to worship.

• Evaluate ministries annually: does each one reflect kingdom priorities or comfort?

• Set aside the first fruits of every special offering for outreach before any other expense.

• Regularly audit to ensure simplicity and integrity (Luke 16:10).

• Trust God’s promise: “Test Me in this… and see if I will not open the windows of heaven.” (Malachi 3:10)

Encouragement and Assurance

The widow left the temple unknown to crowds yet honored by Christ. When our church gives with her spirit, “my God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)

In what ways can we prioritize giving over material wealth in our lives?
