1Then Hiram, king of Tyre, sent messengers to David, with cedar timber, masons and carpenters, to build him a house. 2And David perceived that the LORD had confirmed him as king over Israel, for his kingdom was exalted on high, because of His people Israel.

3And David took more wives at Jerusalem; and David had more sons and daughters. 4Now these are the names of his children whom he had in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphalet.

8And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, they came up in full force to try to capture David. And when David learned of it, he marched out to meet them. 9When the Philistines arrived, they raided the valley of Rephaim. 10And David inquired of God: “Shall I go up against the Philistines? And will You deliver them into my hand?” And the LORD said, “Go up; for I will deliver them into your hand.” 11So David and his men came up to Baal-perazim, where David defeated them. Then David said, “God has broken out upon my enemies like water breaking out.” Therefore, they called the name of that place “Baal-perazim” (God of divisions). 12And when they found that the Philistines had left their gods behind there, David ordered them to be burned.

13And the Philistines again raided that valley. 14Therefore, David again inquired of God; and God said, “Do not go directly up to meet them. Circle around behind them, and come upon them opposite the mulberry trees. 15And when you hear a sound like marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall go out to battle; for God has gone forth before you to defeat the army of the Philistines.” 16Then David did as God had commanded; and they routed the army of the Philistines from Gibeon to Gazer. 17And the fame of David spread into all lands; and the LORD brought the fear of him upon all nations.
