1And Elijah, the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, told Ahab, “As the LORD God of Israel lives, before Whom I stand, there shall not be either dew or rain in the next few years, until I give the word.” 2And then this word of the LORD came to Elijah, 3“Leave here, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith (Kerith), east of the Jordan. 4And you shall drink from the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to bring you food there.” 5So he went according to the word of the LORD, and stayed by the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan. 6And the ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and evening; and he drank from the brook. 7And over time, the brook dried up, due to the draught in the land. 8Then this word of the LORD came to him, 9“Go to Zarephath, near the city of Sidon, and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.” 10So he went to Zarephath. And when he reached the gate of the city, the widow was there gathering sticks. And he asked her, “Would you fetch me a little water in a pot, that I may drink?” 11And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, “And would you bring me a piece of bread?” 12And she said, “As surely as the LORD, your God, lives, I have no bread, only a handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a jug; and I am gathering a few sticks, to take home and prepare a meal for my son and me to eat - and die.” 13And Elijah said, “Fear not; go home and do as you said. But first make a little loaf, and bring it to me, and then make some for you and for your son. 14For this is what the LORD God of Israel says, ‘The barrel of meal shall not be used up, nor shall the jug of oil run empty, until the day that the LORD sends rain upon the earth.’” 15And she went and did as Elijah said; and she, Elijah, and her son, continued eating from it for many days. 16And the barrel of meal was never depleted, nor did the jug of oil fail, in keeping with the word of the LORD, which He spoke by Elijah. 17And after some time, the widow’s son became ill; and his illness became so severe, that he stopped breathing. 18And she said to Elijah, “What have you against me, O you man of God? Have you come here to remind me of my sin, and kill my son?” 19And Elijah said, “Give me your son.” And he took him out of her arms, and carried him up into a loft, where he had been staying, and laid him on his own bed. 20And he cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, have You also brought tragedy upon this widow with whom I am staying, by slaying her son?” 21And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried to the LORD, saying, “O LORD, my God, I pray You, let this child's soul return to him again.” 22And the LORD heard the cry of Elijah; and the soul of the child returned to him, and he revived. 23And Elijah brought the child back down from the loft into the house, and handed him to his mother, and said, “Look, your son is alive!” 24And then woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the LORD truly speaks though you.” Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
