Exodus 20

1And God spoke all these words: 2I am the LORD your God, Who has brought you out of Egypt, the land of slavery. 3You must have no other gods before Me. 4You must not make an idol of an image, or likeness of anything in heaven above, on the earth beneath, or is in the water under the earth. 5You must not bow down to them, nor serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the iniquity of the fathers upon their children even to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me; 6But showing mercy to thousands of those who love Me, and keep My commandments. 7You must not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that misuses His name. 8Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days you may labor, and do all your work: 10But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you must not do any work - neither you, your son, daughter, manservant, maidservant, your cattle, nor the stranger that is within your gates. 11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and He rested the seventh day; therefore, the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it. 12Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God gives you. 13You must not murder. 14You must not commit adultery. 15You must not steal. 16You must not bear false witness (give false testimony) against your neighbor. 17You must not covet your neighbor's house, your neighbor's wife, his manservant or maidservant, nor his ox, donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

18And all the people heard the thunderings, and saw the lightnings, and heard the noise of the trumpet, and saw the mountain smoking; and when all this occurred, the people trembled, and stayed at a distance. 19And they said to Moses, “Speak to us, yourself, and we will listen; but do not have God speak to us, or we may die.” 20And Moses said to the people, “Fear not; for God has come to test you, so that the fear of Him may be with you to keep you from sinning.” 21And the people remained at a distance, and Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.

22And the LORD said to Moses, “Tell the children of Israel this: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven. 23You must make no gods of silver nor of gold, to rival Me.

24‘You shall build an altar of earth unto Me, and shall sacrifice your burnt offerings, your peace offerings, your sheep, and your oxen on it. Wherever I cause My name to be remembered and honored, I will come to you, and I will bless you. 25And if you do make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of cut (dressed) stone; for if you use a tool on it, you will defile it. 26Nor shall you approach My altar by steps, so that your nakedness is not exposed on them.
