1‘Now these are the laws that you shall set before them: 2If you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve you only six years; and in the seventh, he shall go free, without paying anything. 3If he was single when he became your slave, he shall leave by himself; if he was married, then his wife shall go out with him. 4But if his master has given him a wife, and she has born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall remain her master's, and he shall go out by himself. 5And if the slave shall plainly say, “I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free”, 6Then his master shall bring him to the judges; he shall also take him to the door, or to the door post; and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him forever. 7And if a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go free as the male slaves do. 8If she does not please her master, who has selected her for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed; he has no right to sell her to a foreign nation, since he has dealt deceitfully with her. 9And if he has betrothed her to his son, he shall grant her the rights of daughters. 10If he marries another wife; he must not reduce her food, clothing, or her marital rights. 11And if he does not provide these three things to her, then she shall go free, without payment of money (at no cost).

12‘Anyone who strikes a man with a fatal blow shall surely be put to death. 13But if a man does it unintentionally, not premeditated; then he shall flee to a place that I will designate. 14But if someone schemes against his neighbor, to slay him with guile; you shall take him from My altar, and put him to death. 15Anyone who strikes his father, or mother, shall surely be put to death. 16Anyone that steals (kidnaps) a person shall surely be put to death, whether he sells the person, or if he or she is found in his possession. 17Anyone who curses his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

18‘And if two men quarrel, and one strikes the other with a stone, or with his fist, and he does not die, but becomes bed-ridden: 19Then the one that struck him shall not be punished if he rises again, and can walk around with a crutch; he shall only pay for the loss of his time, and see that he is completely recovered. 20And if a man strikes his slave, or his maid, with a rod, so that he or she dies; he shall be surely punished. 21But if he or she recovers in a day or two, he shall not be punished; for he or she is his money (property). 22If two people fight, and one hurts a woman with child, so that her child is born prematurely, but no further mischief follows; he shall be punished in accordance with whatever her husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23But if any mischief follows, then you shall take life for life, 24Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. 26And if a man strikes the eye of his slave, or his maid, that it becomes blind; he shall let him or her go free for the eye's sake. 27And if he knocks out his slave's tooth; he shall let him or her go free for the tooth's sake.

28‘If an ox gores a man or a woman, causing death; then the ox shall be surely stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be clear of responsibility. 29But if the ox was reputed to push with his horn in the past, and his owner had been warned, and he has failed to keep him penned in, and he has killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner shall also be put to death. 30If a sum of money is demanded instead, then he may redeem his life by whatever is demanded of him. 31This law applies, whether he has gored a son or a daughter; he shall be dealt with according to this same judgment. 32If the ox pushes a male or female slave; he must pay their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.

33‘And if a man uncovers a pit, or if he digs a pit, and fails to cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls into it; 34The owner of the pit shall make it good, and pay money to its owner; and the dead beast shall belong to the pit owner. 35And if anyone's ox injures another man's ox, and it dies; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the price of it between them; and they shall also divide the dead ox. 36But if it was known to push in time past, and his owner has not kept him in; he shall surely pay ox for ox; and the dead shall be his own.
