1Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children: and she had an Egyptian slave girl, whose name was Hagar. 2And Sarai said to Abram, “Look, the LORD has kept me from having children. Go in unto my slave girl; perhaps I may obtain children by her.” And Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3And after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar, her Egyptian slave girl, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. 4And he slept with Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she was pregnant, her mistress (Sarai) was despised in her eyes. 5Then Sarai said to Abram, “This wrong done to me is upon you: I have given my maid into your arms; and now, when she has conceived, I am despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and you.” 6But Abram said to Sarai, “Look, your slave girl is in your hands; do with her as you think best.” And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, Hagar ran away.

7And the Angel of the LORD found Hagar by a spring of water in the wilderness, beside the road to Shur. 8And He said, “Hagar, Sarai's maid, where have you come from? And where are you going?” And she said, “I am running away from my mistress, Sarai.” 9And the Angel of the LORD said, “Return to your mistress, and submit to her authority.” 10And the Angel of the LORD said further, “I will multiply your offspring exceedingly, that they can not be numbered for multitude.” 11And the Angel added, “Look, you are now with child, and you shall bear a son, and shall name him Ishmael (“God hears”); because the LORD has heard your affliction. 12And he (Ishmael) will be a wild donkey of a man; he will be hostile toward everyone, and everyone shall be against him; and he shall dwell in open hostility toward all his brothers.” 13And she called the name of the LORD Who spoke to her, “You are the God Who sees me”; for she said, “I have now seen One that sees me.” 14That is why the spring was called “Beer-lahai-roi” (“well of the One Who sees me”); it is still there between Kadesh and Bered. 15And Hagar bore a son to Abram: and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16And Abram was eighty-six years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.
