1And God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and settle there. Build an altar there to God, Who appeared to you when you fled from your brother, Esau.” 2So Jacob told his household, and all that were with him, “Get rid of any the foreign gods (idols) that you may have with you, purify yourselves, and change your garments: 3And let us go up to Bethel; and I will build an altar there to God, Who answered me in the day of my distress, and has been with me all along the way, wherever I went.” 4And they gave to Jacob all the idols to strange gods they had, and all their earrings; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was near Shechem. 5And they journeyed: and the terror of God spread throughout the cities around them, so they did not pursue or try to avenge the sons of Jacob. 6And so Jacob and his household came to Luz, that is, Bethel, in the land of Canaan. 7And he built an altar there, and called the place “El-bethel” (God of Bethel); because God had appeared to him there, when he fled from Esau. 8But Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died there, and she was buried under an oak outside of Bethel: and so it was named “Allon-bacuth” (the oak of mourning). 9And God appeared to Jacob again, when he returned from Paddan-aram, and blessed him. 10And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob: but your name shall no longer be Jacob, Israel shall be your name;” and so He named him Israel. 11And God said to him, “I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come out of your loins; 12And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, and to your descendants after you.” 13And God went up from him at that place where He had talked with him. 14And Jacob set up a stone pillar in the place where God talked with him; and he poured a drink offering, and then oil on it. 15And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, “Bethel” (house of God). 16And they moved on from Bethel; and while they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth with great difficulty. 17And while she was in hard labor, the midwife told her, “Fear not; you shall also have this son.” 18And as her soul was in departing (for she died), she called his name “Ben-oni” (son of my sorrow): but Jacob, his father, named him Benjamin (son of my right hand). 19And so Rachel died, and was buried on the road to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. 20And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day. 21And Israel continued his journey, and camped beyond the tower of Migdal-Edar. 22And while Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and slept with Bilhah, his father's concubine; and Israel, who had twelve sons. heard about it. 23His sons by Leah were: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn; Simeon; Levi; Judah; Issachar; and Zebulun. 24The sons by Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin; 25And the sons by Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid: Dan, and Naphtali; 26And the sons by Zilpah, Leah's handmaid: Gad, and Asher. These are the twelve sons of Jacob, born to him in Paddan-aram. 27And Jacob returned to Isaac, his father, in Mamre, near Kiriath-Arba, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac both stayed as foreigners. 28Isaac lived a hundred eighty years. 29And then Isaac died of old age; and joined his people in death. And his sons, Esau and Jacob, buried him. Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser. Used by Permission. All rights Reserved. Bible Hub |
