1Then Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and my brothers, with their flocks, herds, and all that they own, have come out of the land of Canaan; and they are now in the region of Goshen.” 2And Joseph brought five of his brothers, and presented them to Pharaoh. 3And Pharaoh asked his brothers, “What is your occupation?” And they said, “Your servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers before us.” 4They also told Pharaoh, “We have come to sojourn in the land; for we have no pasture for our flocks; for the famine in Canaan is severe; and we pray you will let us dwell in the land of Goshen.” 5And Pharaoh told Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you: 6The land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and brothers in the best of the land - in the land of Goshen; and if you know any with special herding skills among them, let them oversee my cattle.” 7And Joseph brought Jacob, his father, and presented him to Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. 8And Pharaoh asked Jacob, “How old are you?” 9And Jacob replied, “The length of my pilgrimage here on earth are a hundred thirty years. Those years have been few and difficult, and have not equaled the years of the life of my fathers in their earthly pilgrimage.” 10And Jacob blessed Pharaoh before leaving his court. 11And so Joseph gave them possession of the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded; and so his father and brothers settled in the land of Egypt. 12And Joseph provided his father, his brothers, and all his father's household, with food, according to their families. 13And there was no food in the entire region, because the famine was very severe, so that the lands of Egypt and of Canaan were wasted by the famine. 14And Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt, and in Canaan, as payment for the grain which the people bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house. 15And when they ran out of money throughout the lands of Egypt and Canaan, the Egyptians came to Joseph, and said, “Give us bread; why should we die in your presence? But we have no more money.” 16And Joseph said, “Then bring your livestock; and I will sell you food for your cattle, since your money is gone.” 17And so they brought their cattle to Joseph; and Joseph gave them food in exchange for horses, flocks, herds of cattle, and for donkeys; and he fed them in exchange for all their cattle that year. 18When that year was ended, they came again to him, and said, “We cannot hide from you the fact that we have no more money; and you also own our livestock. We have nothing left except our own bodies, and our lands. 19Why shall we and our land perish before your eyes? Buy us and our land for food; and we and our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh. Just give us seed, that we may plant and live, and the land not be desolate.” 20And so Joseph acquired all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for all the Egyptians sold their fields, because the famine prevailed over them. And thus the land became Pharaoh's. 21And Joseph moved the people into the cities from one end of Egypt to the other. 22Only the land of the priests was not bought; for the priests had a portion allotted to them by Pharaoh, and they ate that portion which Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their lands. 23Then Joseph said to the people, “Look, I have bought both you and your land for Pharaoh. Here is seed for you to sow in the land. 24And in the harvest, you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four fifths shall be yours – to use for seed for sowing in the field, and for food for you and those of your households, and for your little ones.” 25And they said, “You have saved our lives: may we find grace in your sight, and we will be Pharaoh's servants.” 26And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have a fifth part; except for the land of the priests, which did not become Pharaoh's. 27And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen; and they acquired property there, and grew, and multiplied in number. 28And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt for seventeen years: so that his total age was a hundred forty-seven years. 29And when the time drew near when Israel must die, he called his son, Joseph, and said to him, “If I have found grace in your sight, put, I pray you, your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; promise not to bury me in Egypt: 30But let me lie in rest with my fathers, and carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying place.” And Joseph said, “I will do as you have asked.” 31And he said, “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed's head. Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser. Used by Permission. All rights Reserved. Bible Hub |
