1The next allotment was for the tribe of Manasseh, as the firstborn of Joseph - Machir, the firstborn of Manasseh, the ancestor of the Gileadites; because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan. 2This allotment was for the rest of the descendants of Manasseh by their families – the clans of Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida; they were the sons of Manasseh, son of Joseph, by their families. 3But Zelophehad, son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, had no sons, only daughters; and their names were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 4And they approached Eleazar, the priest, Joshua, son of Nun, and the leaders, and said, “The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren.” And so, according to the commandment of the LORD, he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father. 5And ten portions fell to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, which was on the east side of the Jordan, 6Because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons; and the rest of Manasseh's sons had the land of Gilead.

7And the border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, that lies east of Shechem; and went south to the inhabitants of En-tappuah. 8Now Manasseh had the land around Tappuah; but Tappuah, itself, belonged to the tribe of Ephraim; 9And the border followed the Kanah Ravine, running south of the ravine. These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh also was on the north side of the ravine, and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. 10Southward it was Ephraim's, and northward it was Manasseh's, and the sea is its border; and they met at the border of Asher on the north, and of Issachar on the east. 11And Manasseh had within Issachar and in Asher the cities of Beth-shean and its villages, Ibleam and its villages, the people of Dor and its villages, En-dor and its villages, the inhabitants of Taanach and its villages, and the people of Megiddo and its villages, three settlements. 12But the men of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. 13But when the Israelites became strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor; but did not completely drive them out.

14And the descendants of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given me only one lot and one portion to inherit, since I am a numerous tribe, and the LORD has blessed us abundantly?” 15And Joshua answered, “If Mount Ephraim is not large enough for you, and there are so many of you, then get yourselves up to the forest area, and clear the land of the Perizzites and the giants there.” 16And the descendants of Joseph replied, “The hill country is not enough for us; and all the Canaanites that dwell in the plain (non hill country) have chariots of iron, both those of Beth-shean and its towns, and those of the valley of Jezreel.” 17And Joshua said to the tribes of Joseph - to Ephraim and Manasseh: “You are a numerous and powerful people; you shall have more than one lot, 18But the forested hill country shall also be yours; clear as much of it as you want, and it shall be yours. You shall drive out the Canaanites, even if they do have iron chariots, and are strong.”
