1And the Israelites again did evil in the eyes of the LORD, when Ehud was dead. 2And the LORD turned them over to Jabin, king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; and the commander of his army was Sisera, who was based in Harosheth-haggoyim. 3And the Israelites cried to the LORD; because he cruelly oppressed them for twenty years, and he had nine hundred chariots fitted with iron.

4And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, judged Israel at that time. 5And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah, between Ramah and Bethel in Mount Ephraim; and the Israelites came to her for judgment. 6And she sent and called Barak, son of Abinoam, out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said to him, “The LORD God of Israel has commanded you, ‘Take ten thousand men of the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead them up to Mount Tabor.’ 7And I will lead Sisera, the commander of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his troops to the Kishon River; and I will deliver him into your hand.” 8And Barak replied, “If you will go with me, I will go; but if you will not go with me, then I will not go.” 9And she said, “I will surely go with you: however, because of the course you are choosing, the honor shall not be yours; for the LORD shall deliver Sisera into the hand of a woman.” And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10And Barak summoned the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he led ten thousand men; and Deborah also went with him. 11Now Heber, the Kenite, a descendant of Hobab, the father-in-law of Moses, had left the other Kenites, and pitched his tent by the oak near the plain of Zaanaim, by Kedesh.

12And they told Sisera that Barak, son of Abinoam, had gone up to Mount Tabor. 13And Sisera gathered all his nine hundred iron-clad chariots, and all his troops, from Harosheth-haggoyim to the Kishon River. 14And Deborah told Barak, “Go! For this day the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has the LORD not gone out before you?” And so Barak went down from Mount Tabor, with ten thousand men. 15And the LORD routed Sisera, all his chariots, and all his army, with the sword, before Barak, so that Sisera jumped from his chariot, and fled on foot. 16But Barak pursued his chariots, and his army, to Harosheth-haggoyim; and all the army of Sisera fell by the sword. Not one man was left.

17Meanwhile, Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber, the Kenite; because there was an alliance between Jabin, king of Hazor, and the family of Heber, the Kenite. 18And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and told him, “Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not.” And when he had come into her tent, she covered him with a mantle. 19And he said to her, “Give me, I pray you, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty.” And she opened a skin of milk, and gave him a drink, and then covered him. 20Again he said to her, “Stand in the entrance of the tent, and when any man comes and asks, ‘Is there any man here?’ You shall say, ‘No.’” 21Then Jael, Heber's wife, took a nail of the tent, and a hammer in her hand, and crept quietly up to him when he was weary and fast asleep, and she drove the nail into his temples, and pinned his head to the ground; and he died. 22And then as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and told him, “Come, and I will show you the man you seek.” And when he entered her tent, he saw Sisera lying dead, with the nail in his temples.

23So on that day, God subdued Jabin, the king of Canaan, before the Israelites. 24And the hand of the Israelites prospered, and prevailed against Jabin, the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed him.
