1And when the people complained, the LORD heard it; and it displeased Him; and His anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burned among them, and consumed those in the farthest parts of the camp. 2And the people cried to Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched. 3And he called the name of the place “Taberah” (the place for burning): because the fire of the LORD burned among them.

4And the rabble among them began craving other food: and the Israelites also started griping again, saying, “If only we had some meat to eat! 5We remember the fish we ate freely in Egypt, and the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic. 6But now our appetite is gone! All there is, is this manna!” 7The manna was like coriander seed, and looked like resin (the color of bdellium). 8And the people went around gathering it, and ground it in mills, or crushed it in a mortar, baked it in pans, and made cakes of it; and the taste of it was like the taste of fresh olive oil. 9And when the dew fell upon the camp at night, the manna also fell.

10Then Moses heard the families whining in their tents: and His anger was greatly aroused; and Moses was also distressed. 11And Moses asked the LORD, “Why have You brought all this trouble upon Your servant? And why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You put the burden of all these people on me? 12Have I given birth to all of them? Are they all my children, that You tell me to ‘Carry them in your bosom, like a nursing father carries a nursing child, into the land which You promised their fathers?’ 13Where should I get meat to feed all these people? For they whine before me, saying, ‘Give us meat to eat.’ 14I am not able to bear all these people alone; the burden is too heavy for me. 15And if You are going to deal this way with me, please just kill me now, if I have found favor in Your sight; and spare me seeing my own misery!”

16And the LORD said to Moses, “Gather before Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be leaders of the people, and officials over them; and bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you. 17And I will come down and talk with you there: and I will take some of the Spirit of power which is upon you, and will put It upon them; and they shall share the burden of the people with you, that you will not bear it all yourself. 18And say you to the people, ‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wept in the ears of the LORD, when you said, “Who shall give us meat to eat? For we were well-off in Egypt.” Therefore, the LORD will give you meat, and you shall eat. 19You shall not eat just one day, or two days, five days, ten days, or twenty days; 20But for a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils, and it becomes loathsome to you: because you have despised the LORD Who is among you, and have whined before Him, saying, “Why did we come out of Egypt?”’”21And Moses said to the LORD, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot; and You have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat for a whole month. ’ 22If all the flocks and the herds were slain, would that suffice for them? Or if all the fish of the sea were all caught, would that be sufficient for them?” 23And the LORD said to Moses, “Has My arm lost its power? You shall see now whether My word shall be proven true to you or not.”

24And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and he gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them around the tabernacle. 25And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spoke to Moses, and took some of the Spirit that was upon Moses, and gave some of It to the seventy elders: and when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease. 26But two of the seventy men remained in the camp; the name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other, Medad; and the Spirit rested upon them; and they were of the seventy that were listed, but they did not go out to the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp. 27And a young man ran, and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28And Joshua, the son of Nun, one of his young men, the servant of Moses, answered and said, “My lord Moses, forbid them.” 29And Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all of the LORD's people were prophets, and that the LORD would put His Spirit upon them!” 30And Moses returned with the elders of Israel to the camp.

31And then there went out a wind from the LORD, and it brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as far as a day's journey on every side, all around the camp, and about two cubits (3 feet) deep upon the ground. 32And the people stayed up all that day, all that night, and all the next day, gathering the quails: the one that gathered the least gathered ten homers full: and they spread them all abroad for themselves all around the camp. 33And while the meat was yet between their teeth, before it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD struck the people with a very great plague. 34And the name of that place was “Kibroth-hattaavah” (the graves of greediness): because there they buried the people that lusted. 35And the people journeyed from Kibroth-hattaavah to Hazeroth; and stayed at Hazeroth.
