1And the LORD said to Moses: 2“Send out men, to explore the land of Canaan, which I have given to the children of Israel: send a man who is a leader from each tribe of their fathers.” 3And so Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were leaders of the Israelites, as commanded by the LORD. 4And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben: Shammua, son of Zaccur; 5Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat, son of Hori; 6Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb, son of Jephunneh; 7Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal, son of Joseph; 8Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea (Joshua), son of Nun; 9Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti, son of Raphu; 10Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel, son of Sodi; 11Of the tribe of Joseph, specifically, the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi, son of Susi; 12Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel, son of Gemalli; 13Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur, son of Michael; 14Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi, son of Vophsi; 15Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel, son of Machi. 16These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to scout the land. And Moses called Hoshea, son of Nun, Joshua.

17And Moses sent them to scout the land of Canaan, and told them, “Go up by way of the Negev into the mountain; 18And explore the land: see what it is like; and whether the people living there are strong or weak, few or many; 19And what kind of land they dwell in, whether good or bad; and what towns they live in - whether in open camps or fortified cities; 20And what the soil is like, whether fertile or poor, whether there is wood there, or not. Be of good courage, and bring back some of the fruit of the land.” Now it was the season of the first-ripe grapes.

21So they went up, and explored the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo-Hamath. 22And they climbed through the Negev, and came to Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, descendants of Anak, were. (ancient Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23And they came to the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a staff between two men; and they brought back pomegranates, and figs. 24The place was called the “Brook Eshcol” (cluster), because of the cluster of grapes which the Israelites cut down from there.

25And after exploring the land for forty days, they returned. 26And they came to Moses, Aaron, and all the congregation of the Israelites, in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; and brought a report to them, and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27And they reported: “We came into the land to which you sent us, and it surely flows with milk and honey; and this is some of the fruit of it. 28But the people are strong that dwell in that land, and the cities are fortified, and very large: and furthermore, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29The Amalekites live in the land of the Negev; and the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the mountains; and the Canaanites live by the sea, and by the banks of the Jordan.” 30And Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to conquer it.” 31But the men that went with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.” 32And they spread a bad report about the land they had explored among the Israelites, saying, “The land, through which we travelled is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. 33We saw giants there, the sons of Anak, who descend from the giants: and we seemed like grasshoppers to both us and to them.”
