1And after this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, with great authority; and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. 2And with a mighty voice he shouted, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become infested with demons; it is now the haunt of every evil spirit - a cage for every foul and detestable creature. 3For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of the wrath of her sexual perversion; the kings of the earth have committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth have gotten rich through her excessive luxuries.” 4And I heard another voice from heaven say: “Come out of her, My people, so that you will not share in her sins, and so you do not share in her plagues. 5For her sins are piled up as high as heaven, and God has remembered her evil deeds. 6Do to her just as she done to others – give her double for what she has done. Pour a double portion into her own cup. 7Give her as much grief and punishment as the glory that she gave herself, as she lived luxuriously; for she boasted to herself, ‘I sit enthroned as a queen. I am no widow, and shall never see sorrow.’ 8Therefore, in one day, her plagues shall come and overtake her - death, mourning, and famine. She shall be utterly consumed with fire; for mighty is the Lord God Who judges her. 9“And when the kings of the earth, who have engaged in adultery and lived luxuriously with her, shall see the smoke of her burning; they shall wail and lament for her, 10As they stand afar off, out of fear and cry, ‘Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! In just a single hour your judgment (doom) has come!’ 11And the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no one buys their merchandise any more: 12The cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones, pearls, fine linen, silk, purple, scarlet, and all thyine wood (costly, fragrant and ornamental wood from the sandarac tree), and all kinds of articles made of ivory, and most precious wood, bronze, iron, marble, 13And cinnamon, incense, ointments, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, chariots, and people sold as slaves. 14And they will say, ‘All the things which were dainty and sumptuous - the fruits that your soul lusted after - are gone from you, never to be yours again.’ 15The merchants of all those things, who grew rich trading with her, shall stand afar off, fearful of her fate, weeping and wailing, 16And crying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls! 17For in just one hour such great wealth has come to nothing.’ And every sea captain, and all the ships company, sailors, and all that traded upon the sea, will also stand afar off, 18And cry when they see the smoke of her burning, ‘Where is there another city that is like this great city?’ 19And throw dust on their heads, and weep and wail, crying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city, by which all that had ships were made rich in the sea! For in one hour, she is brought to utter ruin!’ 20“Rejoice over her, you heavens! Rejoice, you people of God! Rejoice, holy apostles and prophets; for God has judged her with the judgement she imposed upon you; and has avenged you.” 21Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder about the size of a large millstone, and threw it into the sea, and said, “With just such violence shall that great city, Babylon, be thrown down, never to be found again. 22And the sound (music) of harpists, flutes, minstrels, and trumpets shall never be heard in you; nor will any craftsman of any craft or trade be found in you anymore; or the sound of a millstone ever be heard in you; 23And the light of a lamp shall never again shine in you; nor the voice of the bride and bridegroom be heard in you. Your merchants were the greatest on the earth; but you deceived all nations by your sorceries. 24And in you was found the blood of prophets, of saints, and of all those that were slain on the earth.” Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
