2 Chronicles 7:15
Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.
Now My eyes will be open

God promised His watchful favor over the temple Solomon had dedicated in Jerusalem. The Lord was not confined to the building, since heaven itself cannot contain Him, yet He chose the temple as the appointed center of Israel’s worship and the place where His name would dwell. His open eyes assured Israel that He saw both their faithfulness and their sin, their worship and their need. Psalm 34:15 similarly declares that the Lord’s eyes are upon the righteous.

1Pe 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous…
Psa 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous…
Deu 11:12 It is a land for which the LORD your God cares;…

and My ears attentive

God also pledged to hear the prayers brought before Him in humility and repentance. His attentiveness reflected the covenant relationship established with Israel: He was not a distant deity, but the living God who heard His people’s cries and responded according to His righteousness and mercy. The preceding promise especially concerns prayers of confession and turning from sin during times of judgment.

Neh 1:6 Your eyes be open and Your ears attentive to hear…
Psa 130:2 O Lord, hear my voice; let Your ears be attentive…
Psa 116:2 Because He has inclined His ear to me, I will call on Him…

to the prayers offered in this place.

The temple was God’s chosen house of prayer for Israel, the place toward which the people were to turn when seeking His forgiveness, help, and blessing. Its sacrifices and worship anticipated the greater access to God provided through Jesus Christ, the true temple and final sacrifice. Through Him, believers now draw near to God with confidence, knowing that He hears those who seek Him sincerely.

1Ki 8:29-30 May Your eyes be open toward this temple night and day,…
Isa 56:7 I will bring them to My holy mountain and make them joyful…
Mat 21:13 And he declared to them, “It is written…

November the Twenty-Fifth after the Prayer the Fire!
"When Solomon had made an end of praying the fire came down from heaven." --2 CHRONICLES vii. 1-11. And the fire is the symbol of the Holy God. Pure flame is our imperfect mode of expressing the Incorruptible. This burning flame is heat and light in one. And when Solomon had prayed, the holy Flame was in their midst. But not only is the flame the symbol of the Holy; it also typifies the power which can make me holy. We have no cleansing minister to compare with fire. Where water fails fire succeeds.

November the Twenty-Sixth Unconsecrated Souls
"This house which I have sanctified will I cast out of my sight, and will make it a proverb and a by-word among all nations." --2 CHRONICLES vii. 12-22. And thus am I taught that consecrated houses are nothing without consecrated souls. It is not the mode of worship, but the spirit of the worshipper which forms the test of a consecrated people. If the worshipper is defiled his temple becomes an offence. When the kernel is rotten, and I offer the husk to God, the offering is a double insult to

Though written by the same hand as wrote Ezra-Nehemiah, and forming, together with these books, a continuous history of Judah, it is placed after them in the Hebrew Bible, of which it forms the concluding book; and this no doubt points to the fact that it attained canonical distinction later than they. Nor is this unnatural. The book
