Elijah’s repeated request gave Elisha opportunity to demonstrate whether he would remain steadfast as the time of separation drew near. Jos 2:1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies… But Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” Elisha bound himself by a solemn oath before the living God and before the prophet he had served. His devotion was not sentiment alone; he recognized that the LORD’s calling on Elijah had shaped his own ministry. Like Ruth’s faithful commitment to Naomi, Elisha refused to abandon the one to whom God had joined him. His persistence prepared him to witness Elijah’s departure and to receive the prophetic commission that would follow. Elijah and Elisha continued together to Jericho, where the sons of the prophets would again testify that Elijah’s departure was known by divine revelation. The journey therefore marked both the closing of Elijah’s ministry and the beginning of Elisha’s public confirmation as the LORD’s appointed prophet.
