2 Kings 9:17
Now the watchman standing on the tower in Jezreel saw Jehu's troops approaching, and he called out, "I see a company of troops!" "Choose a rider," Joram commanded. "Send him out to meet them and ask, 'Have you come in peace?'"
Now the watchman standing on the tower in Jezreel

Jezreel served as a royal center for the northern kingdom and overlooked the broad valley that formed a major military route. A watchman’s elevated position enabled him to detect approaching armies long before they reached the city. The vigilance required of the watchman reflects the serious responsibility of guarding a people exposed to danger.

saw Jehu’s troops approaching,

Jehu had been anointed through Elisha’s messenger to strike down Ahab’s house according to the word God had spoken through Elijah (1 Kings 21:21–24). What appeared in the distance as an advancing troop was the approaching fulfillment of divine judgment upon a dynasty marked by idolatry, bloodshed, and rebellion.

and he called out, “I see a company of troops!”

The report brought immediate alarm to the palace. Jehu’s force was large enough and organized enough to signal more than an ordinary visit. Joram faced a threat he did not yet understand, while God’s purposes were moving steadily toward their appointed end.

“Choose a rider,” Joram commanded.

Joram, the son of Ahab and Jezebel, responded as a king seeking intelligence about a possible military threat. He did not know that one of his own commanders had been chosen to bring judgment against his house.

Joram sought assurance that the approaching force carried no hostile intent. Yet no peace could be secured while Ahab’s house remained under God’s sentence. The coming encounter would reveal that peace with God cannot rest upon unrepented evil.

Kings
The book[1] of Kings is strikingly unlike any modern historical narrative. Its comparative brevity, its curious perspective, and-with some brilliant exceptions--its relative monotony, are obvious to the most cursory perusal, and to understand these things is, in large measure, to understand the book. It covers a period of no less than four centuries. Beginning with the death of David and the accession of Solomon (1 Kings i., ii.) it traverses his reign with considerable fulness (1 Kings iii.-xi.),
