The LORD communicated His purpose through Nathan, the prophet who had confronted David’s sin and announced both judgment and mercy. Nathan’s ministry showed that Israel’s king remained accountable to God’s word.

to name him Jedidiah

David called the child Solomon, but the LORD gave him the additional name Jedidiah, meaning “beloved of the LORD.” Through Nathan, God marked Solomon as the son appointed for a future role in David’s dynasty and in the building of the temple.

because the LORD loved him.

God’s favor toward Solomon did not excuse David’s earlier sin; the death of the first child had already testified to God’s righteous judgment. Yet the birth and naming of Solomon displayed covenant mercy toward David’s house. Solomon would become a king of peace, receive wisdom from God, and build the temple, anticipating the greater Son of David, Jesus Christ, the Father’s beloved Son and the builder of God’s true dwelling among His people.
