Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching

Timothy was to preserve the settled body of apostolic doctrine Paul had delivered, rather than adapting it to accommodate error. The gospel message possessed a coherent form centered on Christ’s death, resurrection, lordship, and the holy life required of His people. In a setting troubled by speculative teachings and distorted claims, steadfast adherence to truth protected the church from spiritual ruin. Paul gave a similar charge in 1 Timothy 6:20, calling Timothy to guard the deposit entrusted to him.

Paul’s instruction came with apostolic authority and had been personally imparted through ministry, travel, suffering, and discipleship. Timothy had known Paul’s teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, and endurance (2 Timothy 3:10). He was not to invent a new message but to transmit faithfully what he had received, entrusting it to reliable men who could teach others also (2 Timothy 2:2).

with the faith and love

Fidelity to doctrine was to be joined with living trust in God and sacrificial love toward His people. Truth held without love can become harsh, while love separated from truth loses its direction. Faith receives and obeys the gospel; love displays its fruit in the life of the church and in steadfast service amid opposition.
