The next day Moses said to the people, "You have committed a great sin. Now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin." Israel had been delivered from Egypt and had entered covenant with the Lord, yet they had turned from Him while Moses was on the mountain. Moses did not minimize their rebellion or leave them without hope of mercy. Num 16:41-46 The next day the whole congregation of Israel grumbled… “You have committed a great sin. The golden calf was a direct rejection of the Lord’s exclusive worship and a violation of the covenant commandments Israel had recently received. By attributing their deliverance to an image and worshiping it, the people treated the holy God as though He could be represented and controlled by human hands. Their sin deserved judgment because it corrupted the worship, allegiance, and identity of God’s covenant people. Gen 20:9 Then Abimelech called Abraham and asked, … Now I will go up to the LORD; Moses prepared to return to the presence of God on Mount Sinai as Israel’s appointed mediator. He had already interceded when God threatened to consume the nation, appealing to God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses’ willingness to stand before the Lord for a guilty people displays the costly burden of godly leadership. Exo 34:4-10 So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the originals.… perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” Moses recognized that forgiveness could come only through the Lord’s mercy and provision. No human mediator could ultimately bear Israel’s guilt or compel God to pardon them. Moses’ intercession points forward to Jesus Christ, the perfect Mediator, who accomplished atonement once for all through His own sacrifice and now intercedes for His people.
