So Moses returned to the LORD and said,

Moses came back into God’s presence as Israel’s intercessor after confronting the people and judging the idolatry in the camp. He neither ignored the nation’s rebellion nor abandoned them to judgment. Moses stood before the LORD on behalf of a guilty people, foreshadowing Jesus Christ, the perfect Mediator who continually intercedes for His people (Hebrews 7:25).

“Oh, what a great sin these people have committed!

Israel had broken the covenant almost immediately after receiving God’s commandments at Sinai. The golden calf violated God’s exclusive claim to worship and revealed the seriousness of turning from the Creator to an image made by human hands. Moses openly confessed the people’s guilt before God, showing that restoration begins with honest acknowledgment of sin.

They have made gods of gold for themselves.

The people used gold, much of it received when God delivered them from Egypt, to form an idol instead of honoring the God who had saved them. Their worship rejected the LORD’s command not to make images for worship and exchanged His glory for something created. Gold was not evil in itself, but Israel’s use of it exposed hearts that desired a visible god they could control rather than faithful obedience to the living God.
