Isaac, Abraham and Sarah’s son and the father of Jacob and Esau, remained in the land as God directed during the famine. Gerar was ruled by Abimelech and inhabited by Philistines, near the southern region of Canaan. Isaac’s residence there continued his family’s earlier dealings with this people and showed that God’s covenant care remained with him even while he lived among foreigners.
