Jeremiah 49:16
The terror you cause and the pride of your heart have deceived you, O dwellers in the clefts of the rocks, O occupiers of the mountain summit. Though you elevate your nest like the eagle, even from there I will bring you down," declares the LORD.
The terror you cause and the pride of your heart have deceived you,

Edom’s reputation for violence and its long hostility toward Israel fed its confidence. Descended from Esau, the Edomites trusted their military reputation and believed no neighboring power could overcome them.

Oba 1:3 The pride of your heart has deceived you,…
Isa 47:10 You were secure in your wickedness; you said…
Ezk 28:17 Your heart grew proud of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom…

O dwellers in the clefts of the rocks,

Edom occupied the rugged highlands southeast of the Dead Sea, including fortified settlements among steep cliffs and narrow passes. Their rocky homeland provided natural defenses and encouraged a false sense of safety.

Isa 2:21 They will flee to caverns in the rocks…
Exo 33:22 and when My glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft…
Sng 2:14 O my dove in the clefts of the rock, in the crevices…

O occupiers of the mountain summit.

From their elevated strongholds, the Edomites believed they could control approaches to their territory and resist invasion. Their security rested in terrain and human strength rather than in the Lord.

Isa 14:13 You said in your heart: “I will ascend to the heavens…”…
Ezk 28:14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for I had ordained…
Deu 32:13 He made him ride on the heights of the land…

Though you elevate your nest like the eagle,

Like an eagle nesting beyond reach on high cliffs, Edom sought to place itself above danger and above its enemies. Its pride led it to assume that its position could not be threatened.

Oba 1:4 Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest…
Job 39:27-28 Does the eagle soar at your command and make his nest…
Hab 2:9 Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,…

even from there I will bring you down,” declares the LORD.

No fortress or mountain refuge could shield Edom from God’s judgment. The Lord would humble the nation, and Edom was eventually conquered, displaced, and absorbed by surrounding peoples.

Amo 9:2-3 Though they dig down to Sheol, from there My hand will take them…
Isa 14:15 But you will be brought down to Sheol,…
Job 40:11-12 Unleash the fury of your wrath; look on every proud man…

Jeremiah
