“I will punish the king of Babylon and his land

Babylon had served as God’s instrument of discipline against Judah, yet its kings acted in pride, cruelty, and defiance of the God who had permitted their rise. The judgment reaches both the ruler and the realm, showing that imperial power cannot shield a nation from divine justice. Babylon fell to the Medo-Persian forces led by Cyrus in 539 BC, fulfilling the prophetic certainty that God raises kings and removes them according to His purpose.

Assyria had once dominated the ancient Near East and carried the northern kingdom of Israel into exile in 722 BC.
