Nehemiah 12:31
Then I brought the leaders of Judah up on the wall, and I appointed two great thanksgiving choirs. One was to proceed along the top of the wall to the right, toward the Dung Gate.
Then I brought the leaders of Judah up on the wall,

Nehemiah involved Judah’s leaders in the dedication, joining civic leadership to public worship. Their presence upon the rebuilt wall testified that Jerusalem’s security and restored dignity had come through God’s help. The leaders bore responsibility not only for governing the people but also for preserving the covenant life and spiritual welfare of the city.

and I appointed two great thanksgiving choirs.

Music gave the dedication its proper center: grateful praise to the Lord who had enabled His people to complete the work despite opposition. The organized choirs continued Israel’s established pattern of worship, seen in David’s arrangements for temple musicians and in the dedication of Solomon’s temple. Thanksgiving recognized that the wall was more than a successful building project; it was evidence of God’s faithfulness to restore His people.

The procession visibly demonstrated the wall’s completeness and strength. As the singers moved around Jerusalem, their praise proclaimed that God had turned a vulnerable and reproached city into a defended community. The public celebration also united the people around the work God had accomplished among them.

The route extended toward the southern gate through which refuse was removed from the city. Even this less prominent part of Jerusalem was included in the thanksgiving procession, showing that the whole city belonged to God. The movement toward the place associated with cleansing also suited Nehemiah’s wider concern for purification, repentance, and renewed obedience among God’s people.

The Joy of the Lord, the Strength of his People
LAST Sabbath day in the morning I spoke of the birth of our Saviour as being full of joy to the people of God, and, indeed, to all nations. We then looked at the joy from a distance; we will now in contemplation draw nearer to it, and perhaps as we consider it, and remark the multiplied reasons for its existence, some of those reasons may operate upon our own hearts, and we may go out of this house of prayer ourselves partakers of the exceeding great joy. We shall count it to have been a successful

The Girdle of the City. Nehemiah 3
The beginning of the circumference was from 'the sheep-gate.' That, we suppose, was seated on the south part, yet but little removed from that corner, which looks south-east. Within was the pool of Bethesda, famous for healings. Going forward, on the south part, was the tower Meah: and beyond that, "the tower of Hananeel": in the Chaldee paraphrast it is, 'The tower Piccus,' Zechariah 14:10; Piccus, Jeremiah 31:38.--I should suspect that to be, the Hippic tower, were not that placed on the north

Ezra-Nehemiah
Some of the most complicated problems in Hebrew history as well as in the literary criticism of the Old Testament gather about the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. Apart from these books, all that we know of the origin and early history of Judaism is inferential. They are our only historical sources for that period; and if in them we have, as we seem to have, authentic memoirs, fragmentary though they be, written by the two men who, more than any other, gave permanent shape and direction to Judaism, then
