Numbers 18:20
Then the LORD said to Aaron, "You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the Israelites.
Then the LORD said to Aaron,

God addressed Aaron personally as Israel’s high priest. Aaron’s office carried solemn responsibility for the sanctuary, sacrifices, and the spiritual welfare of the nation. The Lord’s direct instruction established that the priesthood was governed by God’s authority rather than by tribal custom or personal ambition.

Unlike the other tribes, Aaron and the Levites would not receive a defined territory in Canaan. Their service required them to be available for the tabernacle and dispersed among Israel’s tribes. Their lack of land also marked them as belonging in a special way to the Lord’s service.

nor will you have any portion among them.

The priests were not to build their security upon fields, vineyards, or tribal estates. God provided for them through the tithes and offerings of Israel, joining the worship of the people to the support of those appointed to minister before Him. Israel’s faithfulness in giving therefore affected the ministry of the sanctuary.

I am your portion and your inheritance

The Lord Himself was Aaron’s lasting possession and security. Land could be lost, diminished, or divided, but the God of the covenant was an unfailing inheritance. David later confessed the same reality: “The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup” (Psalm 16:5). The priests’ calling testified that fellowship with God outweighed every earthly possession.

among the Israelites.

Aaron’s distinct inheritance did not separate him from Israel’s life; it enabled him to serve the whole nation before God. The priesthood maintained the worship and sacrificial order through which Israel drew near to the Lord. In the fullness of God’s redemptive work, Christ became the perfect High Priest, and all who belong to Him receive an imperishable inheritance in God’s kingdom.

Teaching Points
Divine Inheritance Over Earthly Possessions
The Levites' lack of land inheritance highlights the value of spiritual over material wealth. Believers today are called to prioritize their relationship with God over worldly possessions.

God as Our Portion
Just as God was the portion for the Levites, He is our portion today. This means finding our identity, security, and satisfaction in Him rather than in temporal things.

Priestly Calling of Believers
As New Testament believers, we are called to a priestly role, serving God and others. This involves living a life set apart, much like the Levites, with God as our ultimate inheritance.

Trust in God's Provision
The Levites depended on God's provision through the offerings of the people. Similarly, we are to trust in God's provision for our needs, both physical and spiritual.

Service a Gift
... I have given your priest's office unto you as a service of gift.'--NUM. xviii. 7. All Christians are priests--to offer sacrifices, alms, especially prayers; to make God known to men. I. Our priesthood is a gift of God's love. We are apt to think of our duties as burdensome. They are an honour and a mark of God's grace. 1. They are His gift-- (a) The power to do. All capacities and possessions from Him. (b) The wish to do. 'Worketh in you to will.' (c) The right to do, through Christ. 2.

Whether Angels Grieve for the Ills of those whom they Guard?
Objection 1: It would seem that angels grieve for the ills of those whom they guard. For it is written (Is. 33:7): "The angels of peace shall weep bitterly." But weeping is a sign of grief and sorrow. Therefore angels grieve for the ills of those whom they guard. Objection 2: Further, according to Augustine (De Civ. Dei xiv, 15), "sorrow is for those things that happen against our will." But the loss of the man whom he has guarded is against the guardian angel's will. Therefore angels grieve for

Numbers
Like the last part of Exodus, and the whole of Leviticus, the first part of Numbers, i.-x. 28--so called,[1] rather inappropriately, from the census in i., iii., (iv.), xxvi.--is unmistakably priestly in its interests and language. Beginning with a census of the men of war (i.) and the order of the camp (ii.), it devotes specific attention to the Levites, their numbers and duties (iii., iv.). Then follow laws for the exclusion of the unclean, v. 1-4, for determining the manner and amount of restitution
