Numbers 18:23
The Levites are to perform the work of the Tent of Meeting, and they must bear their iniquity. This is a permanent statute for the generations to come. The Levites will not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.
The Levites are to perform the work of the Tent of Meeting,

God assigned the Levites to guard, transport, maintain, and serve the sanctuary under the direction of Aaron’s priestly line. Their ministry protected Israel from approaching the holy things unlawfully and preserved the order of worship before the God who dwelt among His people.

Num 8:24-26 “This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years”…
Num 3:7-8 They are to perform duties for him before the Tent…
Deu 10:8 At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi…

and they must bear their iniquity.

The Levites were accountable for neglect, trespass, or unfaithfulness in the duties entrusted to them. Service near God’s dwelling was a sacred responsibility, not a privilege to be treated lightly. Their liability for sin anticipates Christ, who alone bore the sins of His people fully and finally through His sacrifice.

Ezk 44:10-12 Surely the Levites who wandered away from Me…
Exo 28:38 And it will be worn on Aaron’s forehead,…
Lev 10:17 Why didn’t you eat the sin offering in the holy place?…

This is a permanent statute for the generations to come.

The command governed Israel’s worship throughout the generations under the Mosaic covenant, maintaining the distinction between priests, Levites, and the rest of the congregation. God’s holiness required ordered worship and obedient servants. Under the new covenant, Christ has fulfilled the sacrificial and priestly system, yet His people remain called to offer spiritual sacrifices and serve Him faithfully.

Num 15:15 The assembly is to have the same statute both for you…
Lev 23:14 You must not eat any bread or roasted or new grain…
Exo 30:21 Thus they are to wash their hands and feet…

The Levites will not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.

The Levites received cities and pasturelands but no tribal territory in Canaan. Supported by Israel’s tithes, they were freed to devote themselves to the Lord’s service. Their lack of a territorial inheritance testified that the Lord Himself was their portion and foreshadowed the eternal inheritance believers possess in Christ.

Deu 18:1-2 The Levitical priests shall have no portion…
Deu 10:9 That is why Levi has no portion or inheritance…
Jos 13:33 To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance.…

Service a Gift
... I have given your priest's office unto you as a service of gift.'--NUM. xviii. 7. All Christians are priests--to offer sacrifices, alms, especially prayers; to make God known to men. I. Our priesthood is a gift of God's love. We are apt to think of our duties as burdensome. They are an honour and a mark of God's grace. 1. They are His gift-- (a) The power to do. All capacities and possessions from Him. (b) The wish to do. 'Worketh in you to will.' (c) The right to do, through Christ. 2.

Whether Angels Grieve for the Ills of those whom they Guard?
Objection 1: It would seem that angels grieve for the ills of those whom they guard. For it is written (Is. 33:7): "The angels of peace shall weep bitterly." But weeping is a sign of grief and sorrow. Therefore angels grieve for the ills of those whom they guard. Objection 2: Further, according to Augustine (De Civ. Dei xiv, 15), "sorrow is for those things that happen against our will." But the loss of the man whom he has guarded is against the guardian angel's will. Therefore angels grieve for

Numbers
Like the last part of Exodus, and the whole of Leviticus, the first part of Numbers, i.-x. 28--so called,[1] rather inappropriately, from the census in i., iii., (iv.), xxvi.--is unmistakably priestly in its interests and language. Beginning with a census of the men of war (i.) and the order of the camp (ii.), it devotes specific attention to the Levites, their numbers and duties (iii., iv.). Then follow laws for the exclusion of the unclean, v. 1-4, for determining the manner and amount of restitution
