The Levites were excluded from the military census because the LORD assigned them to the service and protection of the tabernacle. They camped around the sanctuary, guarded its holy boundaries, and carried its furnishings when Israel traveled. Although Aaron and his sons alone served as priests, the other Levites assisted them in the work God appointed. Their consecration in place of Israel’s firstborn showed that the worship of God stood at the center of the nation’s life.
