Obadiah 1:9
Then your mighty men, O Teman, will be terrified, so that everyone in the mountains of Esau will be cut down in the slaughter.
Then your mighty men, O Teman, will be terrified,

Teman, a leading Edomite center associated with wisdom and military strength, descended from Esau through Eliphaz (Genesis 36:11). Edom’s renowned warriors would be unable to preserve the nation when the Lord brought judgment. Fear would overwhelm the very men entrusted with defending their fortified mountain land, proving that courage, weapons, and human reputation cannot withstand God’s righteous decree. Jeremiah likewise announced the collapse of Teman’s wisdom and Edom’s strength (Jeremiah 49:7, 20–22).

Jer 49:22 Look! An eagle will soar and swoop down…
Amo 1:12 So I will send fire upon Teman to consume…
Jer 49:20 Therefore hear the plans that the LORD has drawn up…

so that everyone in the mountains of Esau will be cut down in the slaughter.

The mountains of Esau describe Edom’s rugged homeland south and east of the Dead Sea, including its secure highland settlements and strongholds. Edom trusted its elevated terrain and defenses, yet judgment would reach the whole land. The slaughter would remove Edom’s defenders and bring its proud security to an end. Edom’s hostility toward Judah during Jerusalem’s calamity exposed a deeper contempt for God’s covenant people, and the nation would reap the violence it had embraced (Obadiah 1:10–15).

The Consequences of Pride
Edom's pride led to their downfall. Pride can blind us to our vulnerabilities and lead to our destruction. We must remain humble before God.

The Importance of Brotherhood
Edom's betrayal of Israel, their brother nation, highlights the importance of maintaining familial and communal relationships. We should strive for peace and reconciliation.

God's Sovereignty in Judgment
God's judgment on Edom demonstrates His control over nations and history. We can trust in His justice and timing.

The Futility of Earthly Strength

Obadiah
The book of Obadiah--shortest of all the prophetic books--is occupied, in the main, as the superscription suggests, with the fate of Edom. Her people have been humbled, the high and rocky fastnesses in which they trusted have not been able to save them. Neighbouring Arab tribes have successfully attacked them and driven them from their home (vv, 1-7).[1] This is the divine penalty for their cruel and unbrotherly treatment of the Jews after the siege of Jerusalem, vv. 10-14, 15b.
