Approaching Authority with Respect

Approaching authority with respect is a principle deeply rooted in biblical teaching, emphasizing the importance of honoring and submitting to those in positions of leadership. This concept is woven throughout Scripture, reflecting God's design for order and harmony within society, the family, and the church.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible provides numerous examples and teachings on the importance of respecting authority. In Romans 13:1-2 , the Apostle Paul writes, "Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. Consequently, whoever resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." This passage underscores the belief that all authority is established by God, and thus, respecting authority is an act of obedience to Him.

In the Old Testament, the account of David and King Saul illustrates the principle of respecting authority, even when the authority figure is flawed. Despite being pursued by Saul, David refrains from harming him, saying in 1 Samuel 24:6 , "The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD’s anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the LORD’s anointed." David's respect for Saul's position as king, despite Saul's unjust actions, highlights the importance of honoring God's anointed leaders.

Respect in the Family and Church

Respect for authority is also emphasized within the family structure. Ephesians 6:1-3 instructs, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother' (which is the first commandment with a promise), 'that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.'" This commandment, rooted in the Ten Commandments, highlights the significance of respecting parental authority as a foundation for a blessed life.

In the context of the church, Hebrews 13:17 advises believers, "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who must give an account. Allow them to do this with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you." This verse emphasizes the responsibility of church leaders to guide their congregations and the corresponding duty of believers to respect and support their leadership.

The Example of Christ

Jesus Christ Himself exemplified the ultimate respect for authority. In His earthly ministry, He submitted to the will of the Father, even unto death. In John 5:19 , Jesus declares, "Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself, unless He sees the Father doing it. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does." Christ's submission to the Father's authority serves as the perfect model for believers in approaching authority with respect.

Practical Application

Approaching authority with respect involves a heart attitude of humility and a willingness to submit, even when it is challenging. It requires discernment to recognize the God-given role of authority figures and to respond in a manner that honors God. While there may be instances where authority is abused, the biblical response is to seek God's wisdom and guidance, maintaining a respectful demeanor while addressing injustices.

Ultimately, respecting authority is an expression of faith and trust in God's sovereign plan, acknowledging that He is the ultimate authority over all creation.
