Asharelah is a biblical figure mentioned in the Old Testament, specifically within the genealogical and musical contexts of the Chronicles. He is identified as one of the sons of Asaph, a prominent Levite musician appointed by King David to lead worship in the tabernacle.

Biblical References:

Asharelah is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 25:2, where the text outlines the divisions of the musicians for the service of the house of the Lord. The verse states: "From the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah; the sons of Asaph were under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied under the direction of the king" . This passage highlights Asharelah's role as part of the musical guild established by David, emphasizing the importance of music and prophecy in worship.

Name and Meaning:

The name Asharelah is believed to mean "upright toward God" or "God is upright," reflecting a characteristic valued in the Levitical service. The name underscores the spiritual and moral expectations placed upon those who served in the temple, particularly in roles that involved leading the congregation in worship and praise.

Role and Function:

As a descendant of Asaph, Asharelah was part of a distinguished family of musicians. Asaph himself was a chief musician and seer, and his descendants, including Asharelah, were entrusted with the responsibility of continuing this legacy. The musicians were organized into divisions, each serving in the temple at appointed times, ensuring that worship was continuous and orderly.

The role of Asharelah and his family was not merely musical but also prophetic. The phrase "who prophesied under the direction of the king" suggests that their music was inspired and guided by the Holy Spirit, serving as a means of conveying divine messages and leading the people in spiritual reflection and worship.

Historical and Theological Significance:

The inclusion of Asharelah in the genealogical records of Chronicles highlights the importance of music in Israelite worship and the central role of the Levites in maintaining the spiritual life of the nation. The Levites, and particularly the musicians, were integral to the worship practices established by David, which set a precedent for temple worship that continued through the history of Israel.

Asharelah's mention, though brief, serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Levitical musicians and their contribution to the spiritual heritage of Israel. Their dedication to worship and prophecy through music played a crucial role in shaping the liturgical traditions that would influence both Jewish and Christian worship practices for generations.

ash-a-re'-la ('asar'elah): One of the Asaphites appointed by David to the temple service (1 Chronicles 25:2); in 1 Chronicles 25:14 he is called Jesharelah. The latter element in both forms may be ('el) "God," but the meaning of the former part in the first form is doubtful. Thes. compares 'acar, "to bind," "whom God has bound (by a vow)."
