Asher's Inheritance

Topical Encyclopedia
Asher, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, was the eighth son of Jacob and the second son of Zilpah, Leah's maidservant. The tribe of Asher is named after him, and its inheritance is detailed in the Book of Joshua. Asher's territory was located in the northern part of the Promised Land, along the Mediterranean coast, and was known for its fertile land and abundant resources.

Geographical Boundaries

The inheritance of the tribe of Asher is described in Joshua 19:24-31. The territory allotted to Asher was situated in the western part of the land of Canaan, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the west. The northern boundary reached up to Sidon, a significant Phoenician city, while the southern boundary touched the territory of Zebulun. The eastern boundary was adjacent to the lands of Naphtali and Manasseh.

The Berean Standard Bible provides a detailed account of Asher's inheritance: "The fifth lot came out for the clans of the tribe of Asher: Their territory included Helkath, Hali, Beten, Achshaph, Allammelech, Amad, and Mishal. On the west the border touched Carmel and Shihor-libnath. Then it turned eastward to Beth-dagon, touched Zebulun and the Valley of Iphtah-el, and went north to Beth-emek and Neiel, extending to Cabul, Ebron, Rehob, Hammon, and Kanah, as far as Greater Sidon. The boundary then turned back toward Ramah and up to the fortified city of Tyre. Then it turned toward Hosah and ended at the sea. Mahalab, Achzib, Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob were included—twenty-two cities, along with their villages" (Joshua 19:24-30).

Economic Prosperity

The land of Asher was renowned for its agricultural richness and natural resources. The fertile plains and coastal access provided the tribe with ample opportunities for farming, fishing, and trade. Asher's territory was particularly noted for its olive oil production, a valuable commodity in ancient times. Moses' blessing upon Asher highlights this abundance: "May Asher be most blessed of sons; may he be the most favored among his brothers and dip his foot in oil" (Deuteronomy 33:24).

Historical and Cultural Significance

Throughout biblical history, the tribe of Asher played a role in the collective identity of Israel, although it is not frequently mentioned in major military or political events. The tribe's location along the coast and proximity to Phoenician cities like Tyre and Sidon may have influenced its interactions with neighboring cultures, contributing to its economic prosperity.

In the time of the Judges, Asher was one of the tribes that failed to fully drive out the Canaanite inhabitants from their allotted land, as recorded in Judges 1:31-32. This incomplete conquest led to coexistence with the Canaanites, which may have affected the tribe's religious and cultural practices.

Spiritual Legacy

Despite its limited mention in the biblical narrative, the tribe of Asher is included in the list of tribes sealed in the Book of Revelation, indicating its enduring place in the spiritual heritage of Israel: "From the tribe of Asher twelve thousand were sealed" (Revelation 7:6). This inclusion underscores the belief in the ultimate restoration and redemption of all the tribes of Israel.

Asher's inheritance, with its rich land and strategic location, reflects the providence and blessing of God upon His people, fulfilling the promises made to the patriarchs. The tribe's legacy is a testament to the diverse roles and contributions of each tribe within the nation of Israel.
