Definition and General Understanding:
Egress, in a biblical context, refers to the act of going out or leaving a place. It is often associated with the concept of departure or exit, both in a physical and metaphorical sense. The term is not explicitly used in most English translations of the Bible, including the Berean Standard Bible , but the concept is present in various narratives and teachings throughout Scripture.

Biblical Instances and Themes:

1. Exodus and Deliverance:
One of the most significant examples of egress in the Bible is the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. This event is a foundational narrative in the Old Testament, symbolizing deliverance and the fulfillment of God's promises. In Exodus 12:31, Pharaoh finally relents and tells Moses and Aaron, "Get up, leave my people, both you and the Israelites! Go, worship the LORD as you have requested." This command marks the beginning of the Israelites' egress from slavery into freedom.

2. Spiritual Egress:
The concept of egress can also be understood spiritually, as believers are called to leave behind their old ways and sinful nature. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 , Paul writes, "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come!" This transformation involves an egress from the past life into a new life in Christ.

3. Jesus' Teachings on Departure:
Jesus often spoke of leaving or departing in His teachings. In John 14:2-3 , He comforts His disciples by saying, "In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am." Here, Jesus speaks of His own egress from the world to prepare a place for believers, promising His return.

4. The Great Commission:
The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20 involves a form of egress as Jesus commands His disciples, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you." This directive requires the disciples to leave their current location and spread the Gospel, emphasizing the active nature of egress in fulfilling God's mission.

5. Egress in Eschatology:
In eschatological terms, egress can refer to the departure from this world at the end of times. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 describes the egress of believers at the return of Christ: "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise. After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord."

Theological Implications:

Egress in the Bible often signifies a transition from one state to another, whether it be physical, spiritual, or eschatological. It underscores themes of liberation, transformation, and fulfillment of divine promises. The act of leaving or departing is frequently associated with obedience to God's will and the pursuit of a higher calling. Through egress, believers are reminded of the transient nature of earthly life and the eternal hope found in Christ.
