1. Eliazar, Son of Aaron

Eliazar, the third son of Aaron and Elisheba, is a prominent figure in the Old Testament, particularly in the context of the priesthood and the Levitical duties. As recorded in the Book of Exodus, Eliazar was born during the Israelites' sojourn in Egypt (Exodus 6:23). Following the death of his older brothers, Nadab and Abihu, who were consumed by fire for offering unauthorized incense before the Lord (Leviticus 10:1-2), Eliazar assumed a more significant role in the priestly hierarchy.

Eliazar's responsibilities included oversight of the sanctuary and its furnishings, as well as the sacred duties of the Levites. Numbers 3:32 states, "The chief of the leaders of the Levites was Eliazar son of Aaron the priest. He was appointed over those who were responsible for the care of the sanctuary." His leadership extended to the supervision of the Kohathites, a Levitical clan tasked with transporting the most sacred objects of the tabernacle during the Israelites' wilderness journey (Numbers 4:16).

Upon Aaron's death, Eliazar succeeded him as the high priest, a transition marked by the transfer of Aaron's priestly garments to Eliazar on Mount Hor (Numbers 20:25-28). As high priest, Eliazar played a crucial role in guiding the Israelites, including assisting Moses in the census of the tribes (Numbers 26:1-4) and distributing the land of Canaan among the tribes (Joshua 14:1).

Eliazar's legacy continued through his descendants, notably Phinehas, who demonstrated zeal for the Lord by stopping a plague among the Israelites (Numbers 25:7-13). The priestly line of Eliazar remained significant throughout Israel's history, as evidenced by the genealogies and priestly records in 1 Chronicles 6.

2. Eliazar, Son of Abinadab

Another Eliazar mentioned in the Bible is the son of Abinadab, who was entrusted with the care of the Ark of the Covenant when it was brought to his father's house in Kiriath-jearim. This event is recorded in 1 Samuel 7:1: "So the men of Kiriath-jearim came and took up the ark of the LORD. They brought it to the house of Abinadab on the hill and consecrated Eliazar his son to guard the ark of the LORD." Eliazar's role was to safeguard the Ark during a period when it was not housed in the tabernacle, highlighting the reverence and responsibility associated with the Ark's presence.

3. Eliazar, One of David's Mighty Warriors

Eliazar, the son of Dodai the Ahohite, is listed among King David's mighty warriors, a group of elite soldiers renowned for their bravery and skill in battle. In 2 Samuel 23:9-10, Eliazar is noted for his valor during a confrontation with the Philistines: "Next to him was Eliazar son of Dodai the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty men, he was with David when they taunted the Philistines gathered at Pas-dammim for battle. Then the men of Israel retreated, but he stood his ground and struck down the Philistines until his hand grew tired and stuck to the sword. The LORD brought about a great victory that day."

Eliazar's dedication and courage exemplify the qualities of loyalty and faithfulness to God's anointed king, contributing to the establishment of David's kingdom and the security of Israel.

4. Eliazar, Other References

Several other individuals named Eliazar appear in the genealogies and records of the Old Testament, reflecting the commonality of the name in ancient Israel. These include Eliazar, the son of Mahli (1 Chronicles 23:21-22), and Eliazar, a priest who returned with Ezra from Babylonian exile (Ezra 8:33). Each mention of Eliazar, though brief, contributes to the broader narrative of Israel's history and the continuity of the priestly and Levitical lines.
