Influence of Parental Example

The influence of parental example is a significant theme throughout the Bible, underscoring the profound impact that parents have on the spiritual and moral development of their children. Scripture provides numerous instances and teachings that highlight the importance of godly parenting and the consequences of both positive and negative parental examples.

Biblical Foundations

The Bible emphasizes the role of parents in shaping the character and faith of their children. In Deuteronomy 6:6-7 , God commands the Israelites: "These words I am commanding you today are to be upon your hearts. And you shall teach them diligently to your children and speak of them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." This passage underscores the responsibility of parents to instill God's commandments in their children through consistent teaching and example.

Proverbs 22:6 further reinforces this idea: "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." This proverb suggests that the foundational lessons and examples set by parents have a lasting impact on a child's life.

Positive Examples

The Bible provides several examples of parents whose godly influence had a profound effect on their children. One notable example is that of Timothy, whose faith was shaped by his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois. In 2 Timothy 1:5 , Paul writes, "I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also." This passage highlights the generational transmission of faith through the influence of godly women.

Another example is found in the life of King Josiah, who followed the example of his ancestor David. In 2 Kings 22:2 , it is written, "And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD and walked in all the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left." Josiah's commitment to righteousness was influenced by the legacy of David, demonstrating the enduring impact of a godly example.

Negative Examples

Conversely, the Bible also warns of the detrimental effects of ungodly parental influence. The account of King Ahaziah, son of Ahab and Jezebel, illustrates this point. In 1 Kings 22:52-53 , it is recorded, "He did evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of his father and mother and in the way of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin. He served and worshiped Baal, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger, just as his father had done." Ahaziah's actions were a direct result of following the sinful example set by his parents.

Eli, the priest, also serves as a cautionary tale. Despite his position, Eli failed to restrain his sons, who acted wickedly. In 1 Samuel 3:13 , God declares, "For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he did not restrain them." Eli's lack of discipline and failure to set a righteous example led to severe consequences for his family.

Parental Responsibility

The New Testament reiterates the importance of parental influence, particularly in the context of Christian households. Ephesians 6:4 instructs, "Fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath; instead, bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." This verse highlights the dual responsibility of parents to avoid negative provocation and to actively nurture their children in the ways of the Lord.

Colossians 3:21 echoes this sentiment: "Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they will not become discouraged." The emphasis is on creating a nurturing environment where children can grow in faith and character without becoming disheartened.

Conclusion

The influence of parental example is a powerful force in the spiritual and moral development of children, as evidenced by numerous biblical accounts and teachings. Parents are called to model godliness, instill biblical values, and guide their children in the ways of the Lord, recognizing the lasting impact of their example on future generations.
