Instruction

In the biblical context, "instruction" refers to the teaching and guidance provided by God, His prophets, and His Word to lead believers in the path of righteousness. The Hebrew word often translated as "instruction" is "musar," which encompasses correction, discipline, and education. Instruction is foundational to the life of faith, as it directs believers in wisdom and godliness.

The Book of Proverbs frequently emphasizes the importance of instruction. Proverbs 1:7 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." Here, instruction is linked with the fear of the Lord, suggesting that true understanding begins with reverence for God. Proverbs 4:13 further advises, "Hold on to instruction; do not let go. Guard it, for it is your life."

In the New Testament, instruction is central to the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. Jesus' Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20 includes the directive to "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them... and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you." The apostle Paul also emphasizes the role of instruction in the church, as seen in 2 Timothy 3:16 : "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness."

Understanding

Understanding in the Bible is closely related to wisdom and discernment. It involves the ability to comprehend God's will and apply His truths to one's life. The Hebrew word "binah" and the Greek word "synesis" are often translated as "understanding," both implying insight and the capacity to perceive the deeper meaning of spiritual truths.

Proverbs 2:6 declares, "For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding." This verse highlights that true understanding is a divine gift, granted by God to those who seek Him. Proverbs 3:5 advises, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding," indicating that human understanding is limited and should be subordinated to divine wisdom.

In the New Testament, understanding is essential for spiritual maturity. Ephesians 1:17-18 records Paul's prayer for the believers: "that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in your knowledge of Him, that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened." This prayer underscores the necessity of divine illumination for true understanding.

The pursuit of understanding is encouraged throughout Scripture, as it leads to a deeper relationship with God and a more profound grasp of His purposes. Believers are called to seek understanding through prayer, study of the Scriptures, and reliance on the Holy Spirit, who guides them into all truth (John 16:13).
