Jehaziel
Topical Encyclopedia
Jehaziel is a biblical figure mentioned in the Old Testament, primarily known for his role as a prophet during the reign of King Jehoshaphat of Judah. His name, meaning "God sees" or "God watches over," reflects his role as a divine messenger. Jehaziel's account is found in 2 Chronicles 20, where he delivers a crucial prophecy to the people of Judah.

Genealogy and Background

Jehaziel was a Levite, a member of the priestly tribe of Israel, specifically from the line of Asaph. Asaph was one of the chief musicians appointed by King David to lead worship in the tabernacle, and his descendants continued to serve in the temple worship. This lineage underscores Jehaziel's role in the spiritual life of Judah and his authority as a prophet.

The Prophecy of Jehaziel

The most significant account of Jehaziel is recorded in 2 Chronicles 20:14-17. During the reign of King Jehoshaphat, Judah faced a formidable threat from a coalition of enemies, including the Moabites, Ammonites, and some of the Meunites. In response to this threat, Jehoshaphat called for a national fast and sought the Lord's guidance through prayer.

In the midst of the assembly, "the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph" (2 Chronicles 20:14). Jehaziel delivered a powerful message of assurance and divine intervention, saying:

"Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: 'Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's. Tomorrow you are to march down against them. You will see them coming up the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the valley facing the wilderness of Jeruel. You need not fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, for the LORD is with you.'" (2 Chronicles 20:15-17)

Impact and Legacy

Jehaziel's prophecy had a profound impact on the people of Judah. His words brought comfort and courage to a nation facing overwhelming odds. The prophecy emphasized reliance on God's power rather than human strength, a recurring theme throughout the Scriptures. Following Jehaziel's message, King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah worshiped the Lord, and the next day, they witnessed a miraculous victory as their enemies turned against each other.

Jehaziel's role as a prophet highlights the importance of faith and obedience to God's word. His message reassured the people of God's presence and protection, encouraging them to trust in divine deliverance. The account of Jehaziel serves as a reminder of God's sovereignty and faithfulness to His people, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.
