Definition and Meaning:
Jehovah-nissi is one of the compound names of God found in the Old Testament, meaning "The LORD is my Banner." This name signifies God's protection, leadership, and deliverance in times of battle and adversity. It is a declaration of God's presence and power as a rallying point for His people.

Biblical Reference:
The name Jehovah-nissi appears in the context of the Israelites' battle against the Amalekites in Exodus 17. After the Israelites' victory, Moses built an altar and named it Jehovah-nissi. The relevant passage is found in Exodus 17:15 : "And Moses built an altar and named it The LORD Is My Banner."

Context and Significance:
The backdrop of this name is the Israelites' journey through the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt. The Amalekites, a nomadic tribe, attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Moses instructed Joshua to choose men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Meanwhile, Moses, along with Aaron and Hur, went to the top of a hill with the staff of God in his hand.

As the battle ensued, whenever Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed; but when he lowered them, Amalek prevailed. To ensure victory, Aaron and Hur supported Moses' hands, one on each side, until sunset. This act of faith and reliance on God's power led to the defeat of the Amalekites.

The naming of the altar as Jehovah-nissi served as a memorial of God's intervention and victory. It symbolized that the Lord Himself was the banner under which Israel fought and triumphed. The banner, in ancient times, was a standard or ensign that represented the cause and identity of a group, often used in military contexts to guide and inspire troops.

Theological Implications:
Jehovah-nissi emphasizes God's role as the divine protector and leader of His people. It underscores the belief that victory in life's battles is not achieved by human strength alone but through reliance on God's power and presence. The name serves as a reminder of the importance of faith, prayer, and obedience in overcoming challenges.

In a broader theological context, Jehovah-nissi points to the ultimate victory found in God through Jesus Christ. Just as the Israelites looked to the raised hands of Moses for victory, Christians look to the cross of Christ as the ultimate symbol of God's deliverance and salvation.

Application for Believers:
For believers today, Jehovah-nissi serves as a powerful reminder to trust in God's sovereignty and strength in the face of life's battles. It encourages Christians to lift their eyes to God as their banner, seeking His guidance and protection. The name inspires faith in God's ability to lead His people to victory over spiritual and temporal adversities.

In personal and communal worship, Jehovah-nissi can be invoked as a declaration of God's faithfulness and as a call to rally under His leadership. It invites believers to live with the assurance that God is their defender and that His presence is a constant source of hope and strength.

JEHOVAH-NISSI

je-ho'-va nis'-i (yahweh nicci, "Yahweh is my banner"): So Moses named the altar which he reared to signalize the defeat of the Amalekites by Israel under Joshua, at Rephidim (Exodus 17:15). Septuagint translates "the Lord my refuge," deriving nicci from nuc, "to flee." Targum Onkelos reads, "Moses built an altar and worshipped on it before Yahweh, who had wrought for him miracles" (niccin). The suggestion is that the people should rally round God as an army gathers round its standard. He it is who leads them to victory.
