The Koran, also spelled Quran, is the central religious text of Islam, which Muslims believe to be a revelation from God (Allah). It is widely regarded as the finest work in classical Arabic literature. The Koran is divided into chapters called surahs, which are then divided into verses, known as ayahs. Muslims believe that the Koran was verbally revealed by God to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel over a period of approximately 23 years, beginning in 610 CE, when Muhammad was 40, and concluding in 632 CE, the year of his death.

Relation to the Bible

The Koran acknowledges the Bible, referring to it as the "Tawrat" (Torah), "Zabur" (Psalms), and "Injil" (Gospel). It holds that these texts were given by God but asserts that they have been altered or corrupted over time. The Koran often references biblical figures such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, presenting them as prophets who preached the same monotheistic message that Muhammad later delivered.

Jesus in the Koran

In the Koran, Jesus (known as Isa in Arabic) is considered one of the greatest prophets, but not divine. The Koran denies the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, a central tenet of Christian faith. Instead, it suggests that Jesus was not crucified but was taken up to heaven by God. This contrasts with the Christian belief as stated in the Bible: "He was delivered over to death for our trespasses and was raised to life for our justification" (Romans 4:25).

The Koran and Salvation

The Koran teaches that salvation is achieved through submission to the will of Allah, adherence to the Five Pillars of Islam, and good deeds. This differs from the Christian doctrine of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, as articulated in the Bible: "For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9).

The Koran's View of God

The Koran emphasizes the oneness and absolute sovereignty of God, a concept known as Tawhid. It rejects the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, which is the belief in one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Bible, however, supports the Trinitarian view, as seen in passages like Matthew 28:19: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" .

Comparison with Biblical Prophecy

The Koran contains narratives and teachings that parallel some biblical prophecies, but it diverges significantly in its interpretation and application. For instance, while the Bible prophesies the coming of the Messiah as a savior and redeemer, the Koran acknowledges Jesus as the Messiah but not as the Son of God or the savior of humanity. The Bible states, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6).

Conclusion

The Koran and the Bible present differing views on key theological concepts, including the nature of God, the role of Jesus, and the path to salvation. These differences have been central to the theological distinctions between Islam and Christianity throughout history.
