Definition and Botanical Context:
Lign aloes, often referred to simply as "aloes" in biblical texts, is a fragrant wood derived from the heartwood of the Aquilaria tree, also known as agarwood. This tree is native to Southeast Asia, and its wood becomes aromatic when infected by a specific mold, producing a resinous substance highly valued for its fragrance. The term "aloes" in the Bible should not be confused with the aloe vera plant, which is a succulent used for medicinal purposes.

Biblical References:
Lign aloes are mentioned in several passages of the Bible, often in the context of luxury, wealth, and burial practices. The references to aloes highlight their significance in ancient cultures as a symbol of opulence and as an important component in burial customs.

1. Numbers 24:6 : In Balaam's prophecy, the tents of Israel are compared to "aloes planted by the LORD," suggesting a sense of beauty, prosperity, and divine blessing. This metaphor underscores the value and desirability of aloes, likening the flourishing of Israel to the growth of these precious trees.

2. Psalm 45:8 : "All Your garments are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces of ivory, harps make you glad." This verse describes the royal splendor and divine favor associated with the anointed king, with aloes contributing to the rich and luxurious aroma of his garments.

3. Proverbs 7:17 : "I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, with aloes, and with cinnamon." Here, aloes are part of a seductive setting, emphasizing their use in creating an atmosphere of allure and sensuality.

4. Song of Solomon 4:14 : "Nard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with all the trees of frankincense, myrrh and aloes, with all the finest spices." In this poetic depiction of love and beauty, aloes are listed among the finest spices, symbolizing the richness and depth of the beloved's allure.

5. John 19:39 : "Nicodemus, who had previously come to Jesus at night, also brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds." This passage highlights the use of aloes in Jewish burial customs, as Nicodemus prepares Jesus' body for burial with a significant quantity of myrrh and aloes, indicating both respect and adherence to traditional practices.

Cultural and Historical Significance:
In ancient times, aloes were highly prized for their aromatic properties and were often used in perfumes, incense, and embalming. The inclusion of aloes in burial preparations, as seen in the Gospel of John, reflects their importance in honoring the deceased and ensuring a dignified burial. The use of aloes in royal and romantic contexts further underscores their association with wealth, beauty, and love.

Symbolism:
Aloes in the Bible symbolize prosperity, divine favor, and the transience of life. Their use in burial rites points to the hope of resurrection and eternal life, a theme central to Christian theology. The fragrant aroma of aloes serves as a reminder of the sweetness and richness of a life lived in accordance with God's will, as well as the promise of eternal communion with Him.
