In the biblical context, magicians, enchanters, astrologers, and diviners are often grouped together as practitioners of the occult and are generally portrayed in a negative light. These individuals are depicted as those who seek to gain knowledge or power through supernatural means that are not sanctioned by God. The Bible consistently warns against engaging in such practices, emphasizing reliance on God alone for wisdom and guidance.

Magicians

Magicians in the Bible are often associated with the court of Pharaoh in Egypt. In the book of Exodus, the magicians of Egypt are depicted as attempting to replicate the miracles performed by Moses and Aaron. For instance, when Aaron's staff turned into a serpent, "Pharaoh also summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the magicians of Egypt, and they also did the same things by their magic arts" (Exodus 7:11). However, their power was limited, and they eventually acknowledged the superiority of God's power when they could not replicate the plague of gnats: "This is the finger of God," they said to Pharaoh (Exodus 8:19).

Enchanters

Enchanters are those who use incantations or spells to influence events or people. The Bible often associates enchanters with false prophets and warns against their deceptive practices. In the book of Daniel, enchanters are mentioned among the wise men of Babylon who were unable to interpret King Nebuchadnezzar's dream. Daniel, however, through the wisdom given by God, was able to reveal and interpret the dream, demonstrating the futility of relying on enchanters: "The king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed" (Daniel 2:2).

Astrologers

Astrologers in the Bible are those who study the stars and celestial bodies to predict the future or gain insight into human affairs. The practice of astrology is condemned in Scripture as it diverts trust from God to the creation. In Isaiah, God mocks the astrologers of Babylon, highlighting their inability to save or provide true guidance: "Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you" (Isaiah 47:13).

Diviners

Diviners are individuals who claim to foretell the future or uncover hidden knowledge through various means, such as interpreting omens or casting lots. The Bible explicitly forbids divination, as seen in Deuteronomy 18:10-12 : "Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, practices divination or conjury, interprets omens, practices sorcery, casts spells, consults a medium or spiritist, or inquires of the dead. For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD." The account of King Saul consulting the witch of Endor (1 Samuel 28) serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers and consequences of seeking guidance from diviners rather than God.

Throughout Scripture, the consistent message is that reliance on magicians, enchanters, astrologers, and diviners is contrary to faith in God. The Bible calls believers to seek wisdom and guidance from the Lord, who alone possesses true knowledge and power.
