Atheism: Arguments Against

Atheism, the belief that there is no God, stands in contrast to the theistic worldview presented in the Bible. From a biblical perspective, several arguments are presented to counter atheism, emphasizing the existence and nature of God as revealed through Scripture and creation.

1. The Witness of Creation

The Bible asserts that the natural world is a testament to the existence of God. In Romans 1:20 , it is written, "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse." This passage suggests that the complexity, order, and beauty of the universe point to a Creator, making disbelief in God inexcusable.

2. The Moral Argument

The existence of a universal moral law is another argument against atheism. The Bible teaches that God has written His law on human hearts. Romans 2:14-15 states, "Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them." This intrinsic sense of right and wrong suggests a moral Lawgiver.

3. The Argument from Design

The intricate design of the universe and life itself is presented as evidence of a Designer. Psalm 19:1 declares, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands." The complexity and precision found in nature, from the vastness of the cosmos to the intricacies of DNA, are seen as indicators of intentional design rather than random chance.

4. The Historical Reliability of Scripture

The Bible's historical reliability and fulfilled prophecies are used to argue for the existence of God. The prophetic accuracy found in the Scriptures, such as the detailed prophecies concerning the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, is seen as evidence of divine inspiration. Isaiah 46:9-10 states, "Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all My purpose.’"

5. The Transformative Power of Faith

The transformative impact of faith in individuals' lives is also cited as evidence against atheism. The Bible speaks of the new life and hope found in Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come!" The personal testimonies of countless believers who have experienced profound change and purpose through their faith are seen as a testament to the reality of God.

6. The Argument from Contingency

The argument from contingency posits that everything that exists has an explanation for its existence, either in the necessity of its own nature or in an external cause. The Bible begins with the assertion of God as the ultimate cause: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). This foundational statement underscores the belief that God is the necessary being who explains the existence of the universe.

7. The Problem of Atheism and Meaning

Atheism is challenged on the grounds of providing a coherent basis for meaning and purpose in life. Ecclesiastes 3:11 states, "He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work God has done from beginning to end." The innate human longing for meaning and eternity is seen as evidence of a Creator who instills purpose beyond mere material existence.

These arguments, rooted in Scripture and observed reality, are presented to affirm the existence of God and challenge the atheistic worldview.
