Topical Encyclopedia Jehoash, also known as Joash, was a king of Judah who reigned in the 9th century BC. His reign is documented in the books of 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles. Jehoash was the son of Ahaziah and was saved from the massacre of the royal family by his aunt Jehosheba, who hid him in the temple for six years while Athaliah usurped the throne. He was later crowned king at the age of seven under the guidance of the high priest Jehoiada.Jehoash's reign began with a strong adherence to the ways of the LORD, largely influenced by Jehoiada. He initiated repairs to the temple and restored some of the religious practices that had been neglected. However, after Jehoiada's death, Jehoash's commitment to the LORD waned, and he succumbed to the influence of the officials of Judah, leading to idolatry and the abandonment of the temple worship. The death of Jehoash is recorded in 2 Kings 12:19-21 and 2 Chronicles 24:23-27. His end came as a result of a conspiracy by his own servants. The Berean Standard Bible recounts this event in 2 Kings 12:20-21: "His servants conspired against him and killed Joash at Beth-millo, on the road that goes down to Silla. His servants Jozabad son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer struck him down, and he died. And they buried him with his fathers in the City of David, and his son Amaziah reigned in his place." The conspiracy against Jehoash was partly due to his turning away from the LORD and the subsequent judgment that befell Judah. According to 2 Chronicles 24:25, Jehoash was severely wounded by the Arameans, and his own servants conspired against him because he had shed the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest. The BSB states: "When the Arameans withdrew, they left Joash severely wounded. His own servants conspired against him because of the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed. So he died and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings." Jehoash's assassination marked a tragic end to a reign that began with promise but was marred by apostasy and betrayal. His death serves as a somber reminder of the consequences of turning away from the LORD and the importance of steadfast faithfulness.
