Jeroboam: First King of Israel After the Revolt: Death of

Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, is a significant figure in the history of Israel, known for leading the northern tribes in revolt against Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, and becoming the first king of the newly established northern kingdom of Israel. His reign marked a pivotal moment in the history of the Israelites, as it led to the division of the united monarchy into two separate kingdoms: Israel in the north and Judah in the south.

Jeroboam's rise to power was prophesied by the prophet Ahijah, who tore a new cloak into twelve pieces and gave ten to Jeroboam, symbolizing the ten tribes he would rule (1 Kings 11:29-31). Despite this divine endorsement, Jeroboam's reign was characterized by significant religious and political challenges. To prevent his subjects from returning to Jerusalem to worship, Jeroboam established alternative centers of worship in Bethel and Dan, setting up golden calves and appointing non-Levitical priests, actions that were seen as idolatrous and a direct violation of the covenant with Yahweh (1 Kings 12:28-31).

Jeroboam's death is recorded in 1 Kings 14. The narrative describes how his son Abijah fell ill, prompting Jeroboam to send his wife in disguise to the prophet Ahijah in Shiloh to inquire about the child's fate. Ahijah, though blind with age, recognized her and delivered a harsh prophecy against Jeroboam's house. He declared that because of Jeroboam's sins and his leading Israel into idolatry, disaster would come upon his family, and his dynasty would be cut off (1 Kings 14:6-11).

The prophecy was fulfilled as soon as Jeroboam's wife returned home; their son died as she crossed the threshold of the house (1 Kings 14:17). Jeroboam himself continued to reign for a total of 22 years, but his legacy was marred by his failure to lead the people in faithful worship of Yahweh. His death is briefly noted in 1 Kings 14:20 : "And the time that Jeroboam reigned was twenty-two years, and he rested with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his place."

Jeroboam's reign and death serve as a cautionary tale about the consequences of turning away from God's commandments and leading others into sin. His actions set a precedent for the northern kingdom, which continued to struggle with idolatry and instability until its eventual conquest by Assyria.
