Reign of Jehoash

Jehoash, also known as Joash, was a king of Judah whose reign is detailed in the biblical books of 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles. He was the son of Ahaziah and became king after a tumultuous period marked by the usurpation of the throne by his grandmother, Athaliah. Jehoash's reign is significant for its early religious reforms and the restoration of the Temple in Jerusalem.

Accession to the Throne

Jehoash ascended to the throne under extraordinary circumstances. After the death of his father, King Ahaziah, Athaliah seized the throne and attempted to exterminate the royal line of David. However, Jehoash was saved by his aunt Jehosheba, who hid him in the Temple for six years (2 Kings 11:2-3). At the age of seven, Jehoash was anointed king in a coup led by the high priest Jehoiada, who played a crucial role in his early reign (2 Kings 11:12).

Religious Reforms and Temple Restoration

Under the guidance of Jehoiada, Jehoash initiated significant religious reforms. He is noted for his efforts to restore the Temple, which had fallen into disrepair during Athaliah's reign. Jehoash instructed the priests to collect funds for the Temple's repair, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the house of the LORD (2 Kings 12:4-5). The restoration project was a major undertaking, and the work was carried out with integrity and dedication (2 Kings 12:15).

Challenges and Decline

Despite his promising start, Jehoash's reign faced challenges. After the death of Jehoiada, Jehoash's commitment to the LORD waned, and he succumbed to the influence of idolatrous practices. This apostasy led to divine disfavor, and Judah faced military threats from surrounding nations. The Arameans, under King Hazael, invaded Judah, and Jehoash was forced to pay tribute to secure peace (2 Kings 12:17-18).

Assassination and Legacy

Jehoash's reign ended in tragedy. He was assassinated by his own officials at Beth Millo, a consequence of his turning away from the LORD and the resulting instability in his kingdom (2 Kings 12:20-21). He was succeeded by his son Amaziah. Jehoash's legacy is a complex one, marked by early piety and reform but overshadowed by later failures and a violent end.
